Yeah, this was kind of a strategic change.

Bob Dylan-

Folk - Rock - Country - Gospel - Hip-Hop - Folk

I may be missing a few genres in there, and the hip-hop is obv. a joke, but the man has changed gears, both musically and vocally, many times in his career.

[/ QUOTE ]Dylan has to be the winner.

People are underestimating what Dylan did when he went electric. He changed the face of popular music, and he went into it knowing that initially people would hate it. When he broke out the electric at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 - some guy in the audience actually yelled out "Judas". Dylan just laughed and ripped one of the most infamous sets in rock history. 40 years later he's still around and widely considered one of if not the most influential artists in rock history. Hate him or love him, you can't deny that he changed the face of popular music.

[/ QUOTE ]I'm pretty sure "Judas" wasn't at Newport in '65. But yeah, Dylan is incredible.

Also, of course the Beatles

Slipknot and to a lesser degree, Mudvayne

[/ QUOTE ]

What was Slipknot before they went metal?

[/ QUOTE ]

They were still metal but if you listen to "Volume 3: Subliminal Messages" it's lost a ton of it's edge. My favorite quote about their self titled album was "sounding like they were pounding drums to the center of the Earth". "Iowa" was still hard, but "Vol 3" is a big change.

Manchester '66, and he didn't laugh, he turned to the band and yelled, "Play [censored] loud!"

Another band that comes to mind is Incubus. Songs from the album S.C.I.E.N.C.E are way different than some of their later stuff (Amber, Love Song, etc.).

[/ QUOTE ]

True, but they've drifted back a bit toward their old sound. Morning View sounded nothing like S.C.I.E.N.C.E. but Light Grenades brings back some memories of old (esp. "Anna-Molly").

Bee Gees ftw
60s pop rock to disco

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, that was the first thing that came to mind. I was stunned when I first heard their non-disco stuff.

Also, Gwen Stefani. I know it's not totally comparable going from No Doubt to being a solo artist, but there's a big change.
