Default Dirk Nowitzki, NBA MVP?

According to Stein on ESPN.com , at least.

Now, I don't follow basketball as much as other sports, so is it like NHL in that it has an equivalent of the Conn Smythe, a playoff MVP? I'm fairly sure it does, but I'm not 100%.

Also, the blurb that was on the ESPN.com frontpage seemed to mention that the award would help Dirk get over his first round exit, leading me to believe that the first round has some kind of bearing over MVP decisions. If so... why the hell is he getting the MVP? Dallas flopped in the first round, and he was non-existant.

I hear they're gonna have a small ceremony in a tank, since that's where Dirk went for the GS series.

it's just a regular season award.

Playoff equivalent is Finals MVP. The one he woulda won last year if he hit some free throws.

I think we all assumed this already. It's gonna be so awkward when they hand him the trophy.

People say [censored] like that, but was it awkward when they gave Nash his last two trophies? The MVP is not always going to be from the team that wins the finals.

At least when Nash won it was still possible for the Suns to win the championship.

Was it impossible for Dirk to win a regular season award when it was voted in the regular season? I believe Dirk and the Mavs made the playoffs, thus they had a chance to win the championship.

Can we just ban every single euro player in the NBA unless their name is Noccioni or Nachbar?

Ugh, are you joking with us here? The MVP award is typically handed out in front of the player's home crowd, usually I believe in the second round of the playoffs. Which the Dallas Mavericks did not make, which makes it impossible for him to receive it while they were still in contention.

Now once it's announced he's gonna have to fly back from Munich or wherever the hell he lives just to attend a press conference and put on a happy face while facing criticism about the legitimacy of his MVP. Big departure from the norm.

Not to excuse the biggest collapse in playoff history, the MVP is a regular season award, and Dirk has been the best player in the regular season the last 3 years.
