Digg riot over pulled HD-DVD key story
[ QUOTE ]
The power of Web 2.0 is in full effect over at Digg, where users are revolting over Digg's decision to pull a story (that netted over 15,000 diggs) and reportedly boot a user for posting the HD-DVD AACS Processing Key number, which would allow someone to crack the copy protection on an HD-DVD. The front page (along with two and three) of Digg consists entirely of stories flaunting the number or criticizing Digg for its actions. http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/geeks-will-no...tory-256982.php [/ QUOTE ] It's already on Wikipedia: [ QUOTE ] HD-DVD DRM Key Controversy In wake of the release of the encryption keys for the DRM protection of HD-DVD an article appeared on Digg Digg's homepage that was taken down from the site. This action in turn led to a statement by Jay Adelson that attributed the story's take-down to an attempt to comply with cease and desist letters on the part of the Advanced Access Content System consortium and cited Digg's Terms of Use as justification for the action. [28] While some users defended Digg's actions, [29][30][31] as a whole the community staged a wide-spread revolt with numerous articles and comments being made using the encryption key. [32] The scope of the response led to Digg reversing the policy stating: "But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digg [/ QUOTE ] This is an interesting precedent for: - Copyright laws and intellectual property - The power of the internet - The direction of freedom of information and decentralized power of the people |

i tried to understand this post, but failed [/ QUOTE ] Short version: * HD-DVD content protection has been cracked. The scheme is supposedly designed so that it can recover from this particular type of breach; however, to do so would require that all currently existing players would be unable to play any new HD-DVD titles going forward. They are obviously not going to do this. * Digg.com is an aggregator for nerd-type news stories, blog posts, etc. People see interesting stuff "digg" it, and the most popular pages get pushed up to the top of the digg.com front page. * the people running digg.com are complying with some sort of court order to remove any mention of the offending key crack (which is a hopelessly futile effort, closing the barn door after all the horses have left). Digg users are PO'd that they're caving, and are trying to put the key in as many places on the website as possible using the regular digg process. * for right now it seems the site maintainers have managed to weed out most of this. The key in question: Was deleted |

It's cool that digg is standing up for their users. It's a shame I have no idea what I personally could do with that piece of code.

[/ QUOTE ] If I paint a picture of my neighbours tree, am I stealing it? [/ QUOTE ] Sigh. Some proper analogies: If I copy your house key and give a copy to everyone in your city, am I stealing it? If I hack your bank password and give a copy to everyone I know, am I stealing it? Posting an access key to creative, copyrighted content is enabling and supporting theft. |
