This actually makes a lot of sense. Betting when you don't have it and checking when you do is no good. Even if I do get c/r I can call and draw to a flush or two pair. If he c/r turn and bets the river I can be pretty sure I'm beat (if I don't improve).

He actually did have 99. And no, I'm not saying this justifies the river check. The reason I posted is to get input on why betting turn or river would be good.

Bah, I thought it was gonna be T9 after reading the op. So close. Good save though with the "really asking about the turn" line. Doesn't explain why you included the river action and the timing tell, but decent save none the less.
