Re: Official WGA Writers Strike thread.
charlie,
i think a lot of people have issue with your sweeping declaration of "the majority of tv isnt crap". granted i don't think im qualified to condemn most modern mainstream entertainment as crap, but i dont think you are either to say that it isn't. that said, i personally think most of it is awful, poorly written, produced, and directed. but that is just my opinion |

no I was saying the majority of TV isn't crap. Most shows are fairly well written, and most of the people on writing staffs are good writers. [/ QUOTE ] So true. Very easy to label "all TV is crap except for [insert your pick of The Wire, The Office, or any other sophisticated show]" but there really is a lot of good TV programs right now. Please try watching reruns of Love Boat or The A Team. Then realize these shows were hits 30 and 25 years ago. |

CDS,
Do you really want someone to list a [censored]-ton of shows that are poorly written? |

Re: Official WGA Writers Strike thread.
chudd,
I also think there's a large divide between, "TV is crap," and "TV isn't well-written." Just because the humor may seem cliche, trite, whatever, doesn't mean that it isn't well-written. It is simply written to cater to a certain taste, and the stuff that's on TV is a testament to just how well it achieves that goal. |

CDS, Do you really want someone to list a [censored]-ton of shows that are poorly written? [/ QUOTE ] There are plenty. but if you take all of the primetime shows on TV right I would say the the majority of well written, they're not great or but their solid writing. This is hurt somewhat given that this seasons pilots were a complete disaster and that The Wire, LOST, etc aren't on the air right now. The majority of TV is crap would mean there are like 5 to 10 good shows and the rest is crap and poorly written. |

Since when was the discussion limited to primetime network TV?

Since when was the discussion limited to primetime network TV? [/ QUOTE ] Well what do you want to expand it to? Where are new shows shown outside of primetime? Obv you expand it to cable (which CDS includes in his list of well written shows), but what else do you include? Soaps? I don't watch these, but I would argue that they are well written based on the fact that they engage their audience in the intended way (I'm sure some moreso than others). So what else am I missing? Current type shows like late shows and the Daily Show? Most of those aren't terrible. What section of TV shows is CDS not including that you feel so blatantly shows the poor quality in writing? |
