Noise Machines (Kind of an extension of my sleep post)

So I really want to get a noise machine. I know nothing helps me sleep better than the sound of rain falling, but I'm curious to see how other noises works, too.

I'm extremely uninterested in "White Noise", which is all that comes up when I check out Ebay with "Noise Machine". Even checking it out on Google, all I get is white noise machines.

My question is...how many people use/have used a machine like this (white noise or otherwise)?

Have you found it useful? Do you listen to different sounds on different nights?

I was thinking about whether or not I could handle listening to beach sounds or jungle sounds, but I think I really just want realistic rain. Maybe even some thunder (the best part of sleeping during rain, imo).

If anyone can give me a good brand that would be great. I can't imagine there's that much difference in "quality"...but then again, I really have no clue.

Just find some high quality CD or sound file online and put it on your ipod, plug into speakers, set sleep timer.

Can't you just get one of those nature sounds cds and put it on loop?

I think earplugs are way better than one of these machines for sleeping.

There is a homedics (I think that is the brand) that we have. It has maybe 8 different sounds (waves, rain, rainforest, white noise, birds chirping, farting, etc.) It's great --- you get very restful sleep. Especially great for hotels. We have one in our two older kids' rooms so that they don't wake up from the babies. It works great. I personally only like the white noise, but my oldest daughter likes the birds chirping.

I think we got ours at Walgreens.

We have an air-purifier running in the bedroom. It's just one of those short plug-in varieties. Thing is, I don't even know if there's a filter in it; we just turn it on to add white noise, especially since the neighbor plays his TV so loud we can understand complete dialog.
