The thing is... Torre's terrible use of the bullpen isn't costing them a single win. He's just overworking his guys.

that's a great point - also the sky is blue when it is green.

torre's overuse of the bullpen doesn't directly result in losses, but it seems to lead to fatigue later in the season and arm injuries down the road. quantifying just how much damage torre does is impossible.

You know, we all rag on Torre pretty hard, myself included. Sometimes, though, I step back and ask myself this question:

"Do I, a college student with no playing experience outside of little league, really know how to manage a bullpen better than Joe Torre?"

Possibly. But I'm sure none of us could handle players, sooth egos and keep everyone happy as well as Torre does. The players obviously respect the hell out of him and in the long run, on this team, that's probably just as important.

probably. he makes too many pitching changes in low leverage situations and uses the wrong pitchers in high leverage ones. mathematically, i'm sure most of the BP types could do it better than Torre's done. ego-wise, obviously not, kyle farnsworth would beat the piss out of me when i told him he was our new 3rd and 4th inning mop-up guy.

hah ya i was a little kid... had not yet moved to houston and didn't like the rockets yet... was an easy team to like for me becuase ewing is my all time fave player and vangundy my fave coach...both were on rockets when i first moved there and went to a bunch of games

mariano comes into the close game in the eight inning.. yankees score 10 runs in the 9th... mariano stays in for three more outs and can't pitch the next day... just an example of how he has cost them a win...this type of stuff happens all the time
