Headed to Vegas, Where Should I Stay?

I'm headed over Christmas and found that there are some great deals. Where are the best places to stay? FWIW I'll prob be playing ~15-30ish limit so something close that spreads that close would be great too.

I highly recommend staying downtown regardless where you play. The Four Queens is the hotel I'd recommend. I stayed there for 3 weeks, and it is inexpensive, and they have recently redone most if not all of their rooms.

You'll have a hard time though finding those limits downtown, but I heard that the Venitian (sp) is a good place to play and they spread those limits there.

call the poker room of each place youre considerign staying and ask what their "poker rate" entails. You'll be able to stay on property at a reduced rate for X number of hours of play dependign on the casino.

Poker rate is not necessarily the best thing to do over Christmas time since room rates are at their lowest price.

The ONLY consistent LHE games in this range(8-16 to 30-60) in Vegas are Mirage, Bellagio, and Wynn. I don't know about availablity of the games in December, but its just about the slowest time of year. Anyway, to be within walking distance of all three, just stay at any of the casinos between Ballys and Wynn. For rates, sign up for every hotels email list and also check travelaxe.com, kayak.com and sidestep.com. Each of those searches multiple sites. Also check out expedia.com and travelocity.com. BTW if you use priceline, DO NOT look for a mid strip 4 star place. You will likely get the Westin Causarina which is a few blocks off the strip.

5 star - Wynn, Bellagio, Venetian
4 star - TI, Ceasars, Mirage, Paris, Planet Hollywood
3 star - Ballys, Bills, Harrahs, Flamingo
2 star(probably actually 3 stars, but I think its crap) - IP
1 star - Casino Royale

I've occasionally got very good rates at Harrahs(low as $35 a night), Ballys(nice rooms in the North tower, low as $60 a night), and TI(plenty nice, as low as $69 a night).

FWIW, I just got back from a weeklong poker trip to Las Vegas. Although I usually stay mid-strip for these trips (rotating among Bellagio, Venetian and Mirage, according to what deals are available), I chose MGM Grand for this past trip. I was very pleased.

I got a good deal on my room, a Bungalow suite, for the week, averaging about $119 a night (and this was NOT a poker room rate). It was very spacious and comfortable for a weeklong trip. Plus, the pool was great, and I had a lot of good dining options.

I like to play NL, and there was a good selection of these games at MGM if you weren't interested in stakes above 2/5. You would be disappointed if you are a mid-stakes limit player. MGM spreads nothing close to the game that you like (I think it's highest limit game was 3/6, but I could be wrong).

Having said that, one other thing that I liked about MGM was its proximity to the monorail. Since I like to try different cardrooms on my trips, I was a little nervous about staying at the southern end of the strip. However, I found the monorail to be a quick and easy way to zip up to the mid-strip poker rooms. I found only getting to the Wynn to be a chore using the monorail.

In December, I think you will find a lot of good hotel room rates in town, and so you are probably better off staying near the poker room where you think you will be playing the most. But for busier times of the year and for low-stakes NL players, I was impressed by the MGM and would recommend it.
