Straights and Flushes in Limit Hold \'em
I have a question about drawing straights and flushes at micro-limit games. I know it happens a lot, and my only downfall so far has been so much money spent when I have a suited Ax or Kx, and I flop two of the same suit. Probably 5 out of 8 times, I that suit doesn't land on the river, and I've lost about 5 - 7BB. Again, with the straight, I'll have J10, and the 9, 8, 2 will land on the flop. How long should I draw this hand out in the hopes of getting the straight in limit? Should I just rely on pot odds (though I almost always have the pot odds to call, because there are always so many loose-passive players who call initially), or is there a better way? Thanks, and take care.

If you have a flush draw or OESD you almost always have the odds to see the river. You are experiencing variance. IBL.

Cameron, you should probably pick up a book such as "Getting Started in Hold'em" that discusses fundamental concepts such as pot odds.

over/under on how many posts until someone says that this is why they don't play limit because there's no skill involved = 6

Re: Straights and Flushes in Limit Hold \'em
First of all - learn the math of the game.
You said: I have a suited Ax or Kx, and I flop two of the same suit. Probably 5 out of 8 times, that suit doesn't land on the river That means that the flush card *does* come in 3 of 8 times, or 37.5% of the time. Since the odds against making your flush by the river is 1.91:1 or 34.6% of the time, you are actually observing the flush come in more often than it should. You're never going to learn to play well until you learn the basic math. |
