dog's have no clue about their size in relation to other dogs, and are very protective of their families so...yeah.

dog's have no clue about their size in relation to other dogs, and are very protective of their families so...yeah.

I think it's that their "protect" reflex can be much stronger than their rational fear thought process. many dogs also sense that small children are defenseless and are extra protective of them. so yeah, the story in general is believable, even if the facts aren't 100% as portrayed.

Yeah, pretty sure this is right. A friend of mine was house-sitting for another friend recently, they had a Very Large Dog, can't remember what kind. By default he was extremely territorial, but those two bonded well enough. Well then, the wife and newborn kid got back to town and all of a sudden this dog is barking and growling like he didn't even know the house-sitter guy, and trying to come between him and the wife and kid.

I've seen this too! Mean dog gets to know you and is very cool, then does a complete reversal another day or in other company. I've seen my own dog do this to people it knows who come to the door, too. The "guard the house" instinct can take priority over the "this guy's okay with the boss and he's my friend" behavior.
