42" HDTV/Monitor

I was going to buy the Dell 30" because I really don't like playing on two monitors, but then I see both Best Buy and Ultimate Electronics advertising a 42" HDTV/Monitor for $999. The ad specifically says you can hook it up to your computer.

Any issues I should be aware of before I buy this?

I have a fairly new Dell. Is it possible there will be an issue with my video card?

uh yea, you should know that it will likely have the resolution of a 17inch lcd

Yup.

I think "high definition" televisions have a resolution of 1024x768. Most 20" computer monitors are 1600x1200.

Don't get a television for your monitor, period.

TVs don't have the pixel res that monitors do. It'd be great for watching DVDs, crappy for poker.

The max res is probably like 1280x768 or something comparable. You can hook it up if you want to, but you're not going to want to multitable on it.

The W3007 has a max res of 2560x1600.

I see. That explains why the 3007 is significantly more expensive.

The above posters aren't necessarily correct.

Some HD LCDs above 37" have a native resolution of 1080p, or 1920x1080, which is pretty high res. For instance, the 20" 4:3 LCDs like the Dell 2001/2007FPs are 1600x1200, which would actually be fewer overall pixels than a 1080p HDTV. A 1080p monitor would be "wider" but slightly "shorter" in terms of resolution. 4 full size Stars tables would yeild some vertical overlap, but plenty of extra horizontal space. Resized, you could easily fit like 9-12 in there, and since the screen would be 37-42"s, resizing wouldn't really make you squint or strain your eyes.

A 1080p LCD is really not a bad option at all if you value having a really large panel for HDTV, movies, or whatever. I've seen 37" 1080p LCDs for as low as $899 in the past. It may be worth looking into for you.
