Graphics: Anyone got knowledge about GeForce 7600 GS?
I'm looking for a graphics card with which I can bridge the gap between now and getting a DX 10 card some time next year.
Currently, my desktop has a measly on-board GeForce 6100 (supposedly 256MB), but I'm not too confident in it's capabilities. So, I thought a GeForce 7600 GS would be good enough to get by. If I'm not too happy with the performance, I should be able to get another 10-20% performance boost by overclocking it. Also, and that's the most important part, I want to have a new card to be able to use a 2 monitors setup. Considering that I'm only using 19" TFTs I doubt I'd need more GPU power since the max resolution ain't that high - but I'm not sure... Any experts got any thoughts on this? Any obvious pitfalls I'm missing? Edit: And, yeah, I'm planning on gaming on the machine, too. Nothing hard core bleeding cutting-edge but fairly up to date stuff. |

Re: Graphics: Anyone got knowledge about GeForce 7600 GS?
You should notice a significant performance increase as long as the rest of your PC is up to par. The gap between 6000 series GeForce and 7000 is about as big as the jump from 5000 to 6000, which was one of the biggest in a long time. The GS is AGP right? I'm not sure if they require extra power, but thats where you will want to double check. If you have a 350w PSU and that card requires a power connector, you're going to be pushing things close.

It's the PCI-E version that I'm looking at.
Power, never thought of that. I'll have to double check that there's enough output. Thanks for the reminder. The rest of the PC should be good enough to not be a major bottle neck: Athlon 3200+ (clocked @ 2GHz) with 1Gig RAM Dunno the bus speeds by heart, but they should be clocked solid enough. |
