Re: Without question, the worst Bill Simmons article ever.
Simmons is a good NBA writer. Its obvious thats his favorite sport/league. When he writes about other things he looks like a jackass.

[ QUOTE ] The Sports Guy is quickly become one of the biggest...flash in a pan [/ QUOTE ] say what you want, but he is far from flash in the pan. he was writing innovative stuff back around 1997. he was basically one of the first big sports bloggers. I would wager his "relevant lifespan" is longer than most individual bloggers. that said, he has run out of steam |

Re: Without question, the worst Bill Simmons article ever.
To be fair, someone here pointed out that he's an excellent NBA writer. I don't follow the NBA. He's written about nothing BUT the NBA all year long.
I have high hopes for the upcoming football season. He may even mention the Red Sox again, something he hasn't done in his columns since his book about the Red Sox was released. |

I'll bet if he saw this thread, he would write a column about what losers people like us are...

Re: Without question, the worst Bill Simmons article ever.
This is a post about a thread about a column which spends most of its time talking about announcers' abilities to analyze coaches' decisions on whether a player is capable of performing in a given situation or not.

Re: Without question, the worst Bill Simmons article ever.
He's had a few solid ones as of late. His biggest problem is that
1- there's now like 20 people in the blogsphere doing it better than he is who are more timely and have better jokes. 2- he has zero new ideas or bits in two years. 3- He's no longer a guy who has the time to be quick, or well versed in sports/pop culture. This contributes to 1 and 3 a lot. 4- He was never that good of a writer, and won points with funny pop culture bits and relating to his audience. He doesn't do that anymore. |

Re: Without question, the worst Bill Simmons article ever.
I still think his running diaries can be damn hilarious, and I still enjoy most of his columns, but I agree that he's not as razor-sharp as he was a couple of years ago.

Where is the obligatory link to the Bill Simmons Article Generator? Ever since I screwed around with that Simmons, who was my favorite sports writer, has been tainted.

2- he has zero new ideas or bits in two years. [/ QUOTE ] I agree with this - but at the same time, I'll just reiterate that he's been doing this for 10 (or more) years. I'd like to see any blogger stay relevant and funny and keep coming up with new stuff for that long. it's pretty hard without doing any (or a lot) of actual reporting, as was his MO for a long time. there may be people funnier than him now, but I don't think in the historical context there will be many considered to be better bloggers. kind of like the 5th season of The Family Guy being better than the 16th season of the Simpsons - that may be true, but it doesn't make Family Guy a better show, in the big picture. |
