Re: Annoying verbal conventions
My standard greeting is "what's up," and I sometimes get confused when I open and they respond with something like "how's it going." I asked a question first so I expect a response first. I'm never sure whether to stand and wait for their answer, carry on as if the conversation is over, or just say, "alright, how about you." While the latter seems to make the most sense, it sounds awkward to essentially re-ask the same question.

Occasionally I'll have phone conversations that start like this: "Yo" "Hey" "What's up" "Not much, you?" "Nothing, how have you been lately?" "Pretty good, what about you?" "Alright, looking forward to summer/winter break/spring break." "Yeah, me too, how are your classes?" "Good, yours?" "Fine." Finally, after two minutes of nothingness, we can get to the actual reason for the call. This happens with relatively good friends, btw. |
