I'm all for playing by the rules but I can't for the life of me figure out why the NCAA cares about 3 way calls.

[/ QUOTE ]

it's because Sampson wasn't allowed to initiate calls to recruits and it appears he was getting around that by having the assistant initiate the call and then guiding the recruit to request Sampson be brought in on a 3-way

[/ QUOTE ]

What I read in the local paper yesterday indicated that Sampson claims the calls were initiated by the recruit and the three way aspect was done merely as a means of transferring the calls to him.

Exactly. IU/Sampson are doing a good job of spinning this by referring to their scheme as "three-way calling." It was more akin to a conference call, whereby an assistant would call a recruit, and then, sheerly by coincidence of course, Sampson would be on standby and ready to join the conversation.

This isn't an issue of Kelvin the Undresser not grasping the rules, it's an issue of him intentionally dodging them. Bad Kelvin.

I still miss that guy, had he not left WSU when he did, and the players that left with him stayed, man, we would have ruled that season.

Yup. Hire a proven cheater...what do you think will happen?

Any claims that he didn't know the rules or it was an inadvertent violation are just plain silly. Few people are as familiar with the murky NCAA recruiting waters as head coaches in the big sports.

I figured an Illinois fan would come on and offer some kind words for Sampson.

I've never been all that impressed with Sampson and think Indiana could do better. Sampson has recruited pretty well since he's gotten to Indiana, but I'm not sure that will continue with the threat of NCAA sanctions over his head.

PS: I do hope this news pushes Tyler Zeller to UNC.

surprise, surprise, surprise
more than 100 calls now
in one season on probation for the very same infraction!

funny how IU's compliance staff missed this
it took an unpaid summer intern double checking to pick it up
now, the lawyers are finding more and more and more

It says in the article that only the originally reported 35 may have violated NCAA rules.

"In many of the calls, you can't say with specificity what it was," MacIntyre said. "The lawyers have gone over this stuff with a fine-toothed comb, and in some cases they just weren't sure what the calls were, and so they included them in the report."
