playing at tampa hard rock, where the max buy in for any cash game is 100$ (gay)
anyway, playing 2/5
table is actually deep, mostly 400+
anyway tons of limpers and i raise to 50 w AA, an old guy with 100$ calls half his stack with 33
he flops a set and takes my money
afterwards, he said "see now, i called there preflop because i'm giving myself a chance to win a big pot. if i don't hit that 3, i can easily fold. i either win a huge pot, or lose a small one."

Glad this thread keeps getting bumped. Reminded me of something I heard last time I was at the table:

Guy: Did you know that 2 pair makes a full house more often than a set?
Me: Hahaha... yeah I guess it seems like that sometimes.
Guy: No seriously. It's easier to fill up with 2 pair than if you have a set.
Me: Um... well I don't think so. A set has 10 outs, and 2 pair has 4 outs.
Guy: That's what you'd think, I know. But really, if you work out the odds long enough, you'll see. Trust me, you want 2 pair.
Me: OK. You're probably right. No wonder I keep losing with sets.
Guy: See? I told you, man.

This happened a while ago in your typical 3-6 game. It was a kill-pot and I open-raised somewhere in the middle with AQs. I took the pot down without a showdown and the guy next to me questioned why I would raise with AQ there.

Him: Why would you raise with AQ there?
Me: I want to win money.
Him: Yeah, but AQ?
Me: Would you raise with AKs there?
Him: No. Why would you raise with a drawing hand?
Me: Drawing hand?
Him: Yeah, you have to hit to win, right?
Me: Sure?

I used to think this guy was a good player too. I guess I narrowed down his preflop raising range.

[/ QUOTE ]

1. there's no such thing as a good player at 3/6
2. stop educating the fish. Your answer to all strat questions should be "I felt lucky"
3. Don't show your hands when you win without a showdown unless you have a very good reason

Flushes come at least 50% of the time. They either do, or they don't.

[/ QUOTE ]

That is kind of a standard gambling fallacy - if there are 2 outcomes, then the probability of each occurring is 50%. It's kind of obvious it's not always true - gamblers recognize that a sports team can be a huge favorite. But when they are gambling on something for which they have little information, then they get clueless. For example, a prize is behind Door #1 or Door #2, almost everyone will jump to the conclusion that it's a 50/50 choice, when really they have no basis at all for assuming that.

I remember one $1/2 NL player who said JT was his favorite hand, and he always raises with it. He was getting short-stacked (surprise!) and went all in. He winced when someone called him - he assumed he was a big underdog until his opponent turned over AK, when he sighed relief and said "Oh good, I thought I was dominated - but it's a coin flip." I guess either he was gonna hit his cards or the other guy was, so it was a "coin flip", right?

he wants to raise KQo from the worst position against a giant field. T9s is a better raise in limit than KQo in this spot.

Then he check/raises a bet and 4 callers with top pair, 2nd kicker.

[/ QUOTE ]

In most donkish low limit games, he basically has the nuts and the way he played it is fine. You guys who think KQo is a lame hand in a multiway donk pot are confused by too many poker theories. T9s is only a better hand in those cases where a strong hand is really necessary to win at showdown.

And T9s is not the hand to be raising with from the small blind, since you'll be hoping to flop a draw usually, and wanting to play said draw from late position. KQo is actually much easier to play from this position (kind of like playing a small pair for set value) since you will immediately know if you hit your hand on the flop (you are basically playing this hand for top pair good kicker value, and when you hit it you'll win plenty.)

You can never be sure about that. TT and I played in a 3/6 game at Mirage one Monday morning when there wasn't a higher game going until later. (It was a fun game, actually.)

I played with a friend Friday night in a 2/4 game at the Orleans. She's new to the game and I'm trying to help her learn.

Wait, that's right, I forgot. I suck at poker.
