This sounds really good. Sounds like something I'd pick.

The Pursuit of Happyness

Anyone else here see The Pursuit of Happyness with Will Smith? I was wondering what you guys thought. I saw it a couple weeks ago and was not very impressed. I thought it was a fascinating story but very poorly presented.

Will Smith stars as real life Chris Gardner, an impoverished struggling single father who dreams of becoming a stockbroker and takes an unpaid internship at Dean Witter.

It's an amazing story really which is why the film is such a disappointment. I thought it was repetitious. Too many scenes of Will Smith running across busy streets and dragging his kid to day care. The character of his wife is confusing and too brief. She is presented as both caring and ultrabitchy and next thing you know she is out of the picture. The acting is believable and dignified but it's the presentation of the story and the direction that, in my opinion, failed.

I finally watched City of God last night after about a year of saying I was going to. I can't believe I waited this long, it is easily one my top 5 favorite movies of all time.

Layer Cake- Great movie. Bristish gangster film (but not in the over the top, crazy accent Guy Ritchie style) Daniel Craig is amazing and you can see why he was selected to be the next Bond.

History of Violence- I think there was a thread about this recently but I skipped it because I hadn't seen it yet. So I finally saw it (I've been meaning to watch it forever now) and was severly disapointed. While the movie wasn't horrible (it was ok) it was nowhere near as good as the reviews made it out to be. Supposedly "One of the Best films of the year" and made all these critics "top ten lists". It was borderline on boring and William Hurt was over the top and laughable in his role. I can't understand his oscar nom at all. When I hear someone gets a nom for 10 minutes of screentime I'm expecting a Rutger Hauer Blade Runner-esque performance. Without all the hype, I would have said the movie was decent but all the hype really soured me to this.

I keep telling myself I'm gonna watch this (probably for longer than a year now) but some reason I never do. This and Oldboy are at the top of my must-see list right now.

I loved City of God.
I am not a fan of OldBoy. It was entertaining but I was not sold on the story (or the delivery of it), but I think you and I have different taste in movies because I didn't like Layer Cake and I loved History of Violence.
So the fact that I didn't like OldBoy shouldn't deter you from watching it. It was original and interesting.

Just do yourself a favor and watch it as soon as possible. I really can't believe I put it off for so long.

In the 2+2 thread started by Andy Fox I thought it was OK mostly because my expectations weren't that high going in. Andy disliked it and the other 2+2 reviews were more or less mixed.

I just checked out the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and was surprised to see it had a very high consensous rating (86% fresh). I don't think it should rate that high and it sort of makes me wonder if there is a better web site around for consensous reviews (other than The Lounge on 2+2 )

City of God was atremendous film.

I watched 'Unfaithful' last week - a soft-porn pic made by the director of 9 1/2 weeks with Richard Gere and Diane Lane. It was okay but not great for the first half, but took some interesting plot twists in the second half that made it watchable and more engaging. I did get the urge to watch 9 1/2 weeks after watching it tho.
