Default Confused in Schoonmaker

On the profit vs. variance 9-1 rating, is it (profit) vs. (low variance)?

Also, is it (profit) vs. (not being exploitive)?

I had the same confusion and assumed that it must be as you suggest. That way immediate profits are always big numbers.

I was a 60/81.

Higher profits often come at the price of higher variance.
To get higher profits you must often act in an exploitative manner.
Some people are so uncomfortable with variance or being exploitative that they sacrifice profits, often without realizing that they are doing so.

Al

Dr. Al,

Those interested in these concepts might also enjoy:

http://www.adaptrade.com/Articles/article-ffps.htm

"Optimal f position sizing extends the Kelly formula so that the wins and losses can all be different sizes. Optimal f calculates the fixed fraction that maximizes the rate of return for a given series of trades. While this sounds like a good idea, in practice the optimal f value (or the f value from the Kelly formula) often results in drawdowns that are too large for most people to tolerate."

Best,
Mr. Now

In was also confused by this rating system.
To be more clear it should say something like
Immidiate profit 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 High variance/Longterm Profit

Or even more clearly stated.. YOU have AA and push your $100
how many callers do you want
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

After reading the rest of the article I think you meant to
have it rated
Profit 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 low variance
(opposite of what I had before)

Al,
I was confused again by another rating
Profit 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Being Deceptive/Exploitive

Should they not be on the same side of 9?
Pofit/Being
Deceptive/Exploitive 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 NOT being Decept/Ex.
??

There was a long discussion in the psych forum on this and Most of us agreed that you could tell/say anything to someone NOT at the table such as don't sit/dont play while your drunk etc.. but as soon as they sat, they were fair game. (eg. Take their money as fast as you can)

There IS an exploitive point that I will NOT cross because I consider it/them cheating.

As of Apr 10/07 they are still both allowed.

(1) posting blinds when HU and (2) using Timed outs and disconnections for advantage.

(1) on the site I play .. after 60 seconds of being off the table .. the software deals for blinds.. So I can play HU.. post the small blind.. sit out after the hand for 60 seconds.. sit back in and have a 50% chance of posting the SB again.

(2) in 5CD at this site if you time out, you change NO cards but are NOT considered all in. So with a Pat hand I can conveniently time out.. change no cards.. then bet!
Most players do not understand what is going on and call with any kind of hand, only to be shown a pat flush or straight.
