Default How to get off a hand after hitting top pair when you are beat

sorry I'm at work and don't have my hand history to show but I would like opinions on how to play this AQ hand I had.

I'm in MP and raise to $3.50 with AQ. Button calls.

Flop comes 7 8 A rainbow

I bet out about $6 of the pot. Button re-raises to $12. I call

Turn comes a K. I check. He bets the about $22. I push all-in for about $44

He waits and calls. Shows 7 8 for two pair. River doesn't help me.

So I probably shouldn't have check raised on the turn. That is one of my mistakes. I guess I'm just looking on advice to know how to get off the hand after hitting a top pair when I'm beat.

reload preflop.

given stack sizes, you played it fine.

you don't think i could have re-raised after his re-raise on the flop to figure if I'm beat? or raise first on turn?

You aren't deep enough to fold this hand. And since you didn't provide a read, I assume you don't have one. You should be trying to get all in here.

Given your stack size, you played this hand fine. Just bad luck.

Also, small detail, villain just raised on the flop, not re-raise.

So let's say we were both deep enough to not have to lose my stack. Where could I have changed my play? Also are you guys saying if I buy in for 100 bucks, there is no way I can lay down top pair top kicker on that board?

Short answer: it depends.

Against some opponents top pair is the nuts, against others it's worthless. Try to get a feel for who you're playing against.

In this hand when you get raised on the flop think about what range of hands he's doing that with (hopefully based on what you've observed of his play), and how your hand fares against that range.

On the turn when you check and he bet's strong try to narrow that range down again. See how you fare against said range and proceed.
