then the cops come in and tackle two of the guys, yelling "police! police! police!" then a loud ruckus ensues and not two seconds later i hear "GUN! GUN! GUN!"

[/ QUOTE ]

Maybe someone grabbed the gun of one of the cops in the ruckus.

without knowing any of the details... I'm going to take a shot at this one (no pun intended).

I'm a cop and come up on an alley way where two enraged guys are kicking the [censored] of some dude on the ground. I identify myself as a cop and tell them to cease stop the fight.

For whatever reason they either don't stop and/or reveal that they are carrying a gun. I fire a couple warning shots and still get no response and/or turn on the cops with a gun... [censored] it... I cap one of them.

Just a thought

[/ QUOTE ]

Firing warning shots while someone is brandishing a gun? I don't think so.

My understanding is that if a cop ends up in a situation where they fire their gun, they're trained to shoot to kill and not do anything cute like fire a warning shot.

Confirmed. This was one of the reasons they knew Detective Brass didn't shoot some punk (in addition to the shooter having cut himself when the gun recoiled).

Pretty close, but they say 'shoot to stop the threat' rather than shoot to kill.

Why don't they shoot to disarm, or at least shoot to engage the safeties on the other guys' guns?

Lazy cops.

What's the policy for the SBPD with guns in fights? My sister went to an anime convention not that long ago in Baltimore, and one of the rules they had was no guns--not even fake ones. Apparently the Baltimore PD has a shoot-for-takedown policy if you're even carrying a gun in the street.

What kind of crime rate does Santa Barbara have, typically?
