Default 50NL: I CR Bluff River

The more I think about this hand, the more I hate it. I don't really have a read on the BTN. I think if he had a big pair he would have bet the turn, and I shouldn't be trying to move him off a big pair anyway.

Full Tilt Poker, $0.25/$0.50 NL Hold'em Cash Game, 6 Players
LegoPoker Hand History Converter

BTN: $61.05
SB: $33.35
Hero (BB): $50
UTG: $25.85
MP: $51.65
CO: $44

Pre-Flop: 4 4[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] dealt to Hero (BB)
3 folds, BTN raises to $2.10, SB folds, Hero calls $1.60

Flop: ($4.45) 5 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 8 (2 Players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $4.45, Hero calls $4.45

Turn: ($13.35) 7 (2 Players)
Hero checks, BTN checks

River: ($13.35) 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 Players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $6, Hero raises to $18.50

I CR bluff more than most players but, what's up with your bet sizing??

That river raise is <60% psr - not really going to fold much - esp an overpair.

What are you repping? A8, boat, JT??

You prob 3b pf w/ an overpair.
You just call pf, flop and turn.
Turn become a little more drawy.
9 may have completed draws.

I would assume you either 3b or fold a hand like middle suited connectors (78, etc).

Don't see you calling a pfr w/ A8, K8, etc.

He's never going to believe you called pf and flop w/ 66 and went for a river CR when the turn checked through.

Maybe if you bet turn and make a real bet/raise on river...as played - no.

I never played at the $50NL tables much, but I can't imagine this working very often.

Yes, a check-raise is a powerful tool.
Yes, people can bluff the river.
Yes, you look like you've got a monster.

Against a tight player (especially a weak-tight player), this might be a profitable line. If you had tons of history with villain and told us that you knew his tendencies, you could make a strong case for this being the best move.

Note the "if" in that statement. In this case, you don't know anything about villain. Here's a great rule to follow:

When in doubt, trust your opponent.

You have no idea how much money I've lost when -- after just sitting down at a table, or after an opponent just sits down at a table -- I catch a fairly strong hand (say, TP2K) and I call off 50-100BBs against someone betting the unbreakable nuts. I decided that he was trying to bluff me, or getting out of line, or testing the newbie, or a maniac, or a donk, or not giving me any credit, or some such nonsense.

Don't get fancy against an unknown. And just in case the message didn't sink in, a river check-raise bluff is about as fancy as you can get.

Well, I agree with you Pokey. I definitely shouldn't be doing this against an unknown. I should have just folded, but his weakish bet got the better of me. Just a bad play by me. I blame watching too much HSP.

Villain had 66. Surprisingly, he took awhile to call.
