Default What do you pay for golf?

I've been in three cities for the majority of my life. First eighteen years in St. John, KS, next two in Phoenix, AZ, and now Dallas, TX for four years. I've played lots of courses for all kinds of prices and worked at one high-end private course and one municipal course. I'm interested to see what everyone pays for golf. Obviously, I don't like to pay a lot and most courses, especially in bigger cities are way overpriced due to bad design and unnecessary expenses.

The course I grew up on is a short 9-hole course in the middle of Kansas/nowhere. Beautiful bluegrass fairways and bent grass greens. Never have to wait on anybody or make a tee time. Membership is $365/year. Yes, per year! And that includes spouse and children under 21. There are no golf carts to rent so you have to walk or have your own. Storage and electricity for a golf cart is $100/year. I haven't found a better deal yet.

Onto Phoenix. (Sunssssssss!!!) I graduated from the San Diego Golf Academy (AZ campus) in 2002. It's a lame Associate Degree program to learn how to run golf courses. Most places that weren't outrageous or private would let us play for a cart fee if they weren't busy. Which was awesome considering the price of golf in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. I don't think I ever found a decent place with even a decent twilight rate. Which I consider less than $25. I'm sure tuq will provide some insight to Phoenix golf.

Dallas has a lot of variety. I worked at a private club for a couple years with a $30,000 initiation fee and $500/month. You also had to pay a cart fee of $15 everytime you played. (unless you walked obviously) I don't think I could ever pay that much for golf, even if I was a millionaire. Maybe for somewhere with major championship history like Oakmont or Winged Foot. Dallas has a lot of nice public courses with reasonable rates. What I like to do now is go to a place called Sherrill Park in the evenings. You can play for $8 after 6pm. (gets dark about 8:45 now)

1. What's the best deal for golf you've found?
2. What's the maximum you'd pay to play a round at an average public course?
3. What's the maximum you'd pay to play at a nice public place like Torrey Pines?
4. What's a round cost at an average public course in your area?

forest park muni- 0$ Got some connections there.

9 hole pitch and put- par 3 course, 15$ ( Ive been playing this 3 or 4 times a week for the last couple of weeks)

most string of courses around here are owned by gateway national golf, and they have a membership program, so usually I get in to some nice courses from 25 to 50$

This is so utterly dependent on where you live...

Standard course rates here are 65ish (lowest is the muni that I have a pass, $40)

in the ann arbor/detroit area the average price i pay for golf is about $40 (18wCart). i will admit most of these are the nicer public courses. you can find some twilight deals under $25 after 6pm, but you will be lucky to get in 9 holes as most of the courses are packed with leagues.

the best deal i have found is links of novi (27hole course) which has weekend twilight starting at 3pm and for only $20!!! and it includes a cart. its actually a decent course. unfortunatly everybody and their mama is lined up to play.

Average is probably around $30, but I prefer to walk. Not paying for a cart definitely keeps those costs down.

I don't pay anything for golf.

I pay anywhere from 30 - 100 bucks for four hours of hanging out in the sun, drinking Coors Light, and getting emotionally violated.
