Expectation of Internet Privacy...is there any?
Soliciting children for sex (even if they are fake children) is a crime. The solicitation is generally done in a public chat room and its public knowledge that sites maintain chat logs. No expectation of privacy there.
Downloading child pornography is a crime. Its generally done through a download server with no public chat. Is there an expectation of privacy there? Internet poker is clarified as being illegal. Financial transactions between you and the site can be done privately if you want to jump through the hoops, but you play in public and hand histories are available to the public. Any expecation of privacy there? |

(Although, only at the appellate court level, nothing in Sup Ct. yet) Not sure if that answers your question. |

Re: Expectation of Internet Privacy...is there any?
As you could probably tell from other threads, I lean heavily towards privacy rights.
But on the internet, as soon as your packets leave your computer -- it's fair game. If you understand how the internet works, that's the way it is. Your "information" passes through many different hops/routes and it's entirely possible that each one is maintaining a log/history of activity. It's possible to be private, but I don't believe there is (or should be) an expectation of privacy. |

Re: Expectation of Internet Privacy...is there any?
yeah, thats my take also. thanks (and u2 meech).
I guess the next issue is should there be privacy? If you are desperate enough for privacy are there steps you can take to ensure it..eg troll around for unprotected wifi spots, use proxy servers and free trial connecions? |

[/ QUOTE ] It would certainly be nice if there was privacy. An interesting question that I don't know the answer to, is there an expectation of privacy in the books you read at the library? In your library records? If there is, then I have a hard time distinguishing that with not having an expectation of privacy in the websites you read. |

You are sitting in a public place where anyone can see what you are reading, so there is no EoP. |

Re: Expectation of Internet Privacy...is there any?
even less EoP. Your library checkout information is available to a member of the public, the librarian, and with no other law to protect them (as opposed say medical records where a member of the public..the doctor ..also has access) you have no reason to believe the librarian wouldnt share that information. Its no different than the NSA data mining of phone numbers. The phone company has those records, those records are printed on paper and mailed to you in the form of the bill. That is public information and you have no EoP for the release of the phone numbers.
