I didn't include Porgy & Bess because I consider it literally more of an Opera than a stage musical.

That may be an error on my part, but if it is to be included in this discussion, I would rank it pretty much even with West Side story at the top of the list.

somehow it seems that fiddler on the roof just had a great story where people sang sometimes. it didn't seem like the songs interfered with the story at all....but has been many years since i saw it.
