Shreveport, LA - Horseshoe 20/40
Just looking for some information on the occassional (I think mostly on the weekends) 20/40 game (or other fixed limit games above the 4/8) that gets going at the Horseshoe Casino in Shreveport. Wondering if it's good players in the game or just rich tourists looking to burn money. Any info is appreciated, thanks.

Re: Shreveport, LA - Horseshoe 20/40
While I've never played above $4/8 at the Horseshoe in Shreveport, I have seen that game going almost every time I'm over there and the faces are almost always the same. That does not indicate that they are any good, but it is mostly a regulars game from what I've seen and according to a dealer I talked to. The dealer also said that most of the regulars use "overs" buttons also. Last time I was there was the Sunday night of Memorial Day weekend and along with the $20/40 game was a $40/80 mixed game going. The room was crowded and I didn't take the time to go back there and see what all games they were playing. I just noticed the game on the electronic list and asked a dealer about it. He said most of those guys were out of towners and they were dealing any game they asked for.
Good luck on getting the info you are after. |

Re: Shreveport, LA - Horseshoe 20/40
Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I also asked a dealer about it once and got a mixed response. His was, "Yeah, it's a tough game, lots of really rich guys who have tons of money to burn." To me, this sounds like it's a bunch of loose guys willing to call down and lose lots of bets, so I get the feeling the dealer didn't really know what he was talking about.
I'm not too experienced with casino play, so can you explain what an "overs" button is? Thanks again for the reply. |

Re: Shreveport, LA - Horseshoe 20/40
CLIFF NOTE VERSION: "Overs" allows you to play for double the stakes of the game if you're in the pot with another player who also wishes to play higher. Sorta like a kill. Overs players will be given a button so it's always known who is or isn't playing overs.
From Caro & Cooke's Rules of Poker OVERS. When two or more players wish to play for higher stakes than offered in the game, they shall be permitted to play overs. Overs are typically (although not necessarily) double the stakes of the game being spread (for example in a $20-$40 game overs would typically be $40-$80.) Overs shall not go into effect on any street in which a player who is not in overs is active and contesting for the pot, unless the non-overs player is all in. Notwithstanding this, however, if on the final round of action (i.e. the river or seventh street) a non-overs player is in the pot and folds his hand when facing a wager, then overs shall come into play. (Alternate Rule. If there is a non-overs player in on the river, then overs shall not be permitted regardless of whether all non-overs players have dropped out.) Overs shall not be optional; when overs players are the only ones contesting the pot the stakes automatically increase. If players are playing super-overs (meaning stakes over and above the overs stakes) then all the same rules shall be in effect. A player shall not be permitted to play super-overs unless he is also playing overs. Overs and Super-overs are sometimes played pot-limit and even no-limit. (IE. $15-$30 with $30-$60 overs and pot-limit or no-limit super overs.) Overs are primarily played in smaller cardrooms to enable players to play for different stakes that are not available in the cardroom. Where a variety of games at different stakes are offered, there is no reason for overs and they should not be permitted. |

Re: Shreveport, LA - Horseshoe 20/40
Excellent explanation Sirtimo.
Spt, like you, I don't know much more about the $20/40 than what I've been told by the dealers and from what I've casually observed while sitting at my table and seeing that game across the room. I agree on your observation about the dealers comments. No offense to any dealers here but in general I take dealer's poker advice with a grain of salt. Heck I had a dealer at the Shoe in Shreveport sit there and tell us that there was no skill in $4/8 Hold'em and at the end of the day the luckiest person had the most chips. I got the biggest kick out of that one. |

Re: Shreveport, LA - Horseshoe 20/40
Where I play, if there are only "over" players left in the hand, it is changed to no limit.
When you get a couple of overs players in the game, a lot of times they will play more aggressively, trying to raise out the other players so they can gambool it up for the rest of the hand. Depending on your point of view, this can either make the game more exciting, or really screw it up |

Re: Shreveport, LA - Horseshoe 20/40
From what I've heard the dealers say at the Shoe in Shreveport the overs buttons work as Sirtimo's description says. But ya I can see how that would screw things up LWing.
