I'm confused- why are there higher greens fees? I assume you are talking about warm-weather locals that might bring in tourists? Depending on the course (many don't do so well with drainage) you can play year round here in Portland, but given the strong chance of rain, rates are dirt cheap.

HP,

Rates are WAY higher here in the winter.

June: 110 degrees, most courses in mediocre condition.

January: 65-75 degrees, most courses in great condition.

Troon North rack rate: now, $90 on weekends; wintertime around $250 or so.

I plan to continue sucking on a regular basis, despite my hate for the Vegas 54 degree average daily high from mid-Nov through late Feb.

Man, that sucks. I had assumed rates would go down in the winter.

I plan on playing thru the winter so I can dominate kyleb and Entity come next summer. $$$$$$

They will here. Different peak seasons for good golfing weather due to summer being too hot there (same thing in palm springs where all the private courses aren't even open during the summer). I'm pretty sure vegas is cheaper during the hottest months as well.

Northern Europe, courses are open throughout the winter, weather permitting, frost, snow and too much water can close courses. Many courses do create temporary greens for the winter, often of good quality but still temporary as in slower and bumpier. Many places you are not allowed to use trolleys during the winter but will have to carry your bag. Courses are never overseeded, as the grass can not grow during winter (nov-feb). Most courses open the real greens again during march and closes them around the first real frost in late november early december.

Golf courses will be open here (Ireland) all winter but most parkland courses will be wet and you can't play off fairways so i'll play more links golf over the winter

Golf courses are open intermittently in Denver during the winter - whenever we get 10-15 days of consecutive sunshine all the snow melts.

Only for the brave. You like playing in 48mph wind gusts when it is 48 degrees F?

The leaves are falling here in Ohio/Michigan, but several area courses do a great job with removing them. Things are fine up until about October 20th.

This must really suck for the employees of golf courses up there. I don't know how they can keep a full staff with all the uncertainty.

My condo complex started overseeding this morning, but it will be nearly a month before the golf course I live on gets around to it. It's a pretty long window. I truly "feel" fall when they do that, it's usually starting to cool down by then and I look out my window and the once-green course is totally brown.
