little cousin getting pushed around

My aunt called me up the other day and asked me for some advice concerning my cousin, who has just begun kindergarten at an all boys school. It’s been a week and he’s had a couple run ins on the playground already. In one instance, a kid was teasing him in class, so when they got to recess, my cousin teased the other kid, and then the other kid picked him up and put him on his butt. My cousin began to cry but as far as I know, wasn’t hurt in any way. I’m not super clear on the other thing that happened, but the jist of it seems to be that my cousin was having a verbal disagreement w/ another boy who resolved the conflict by smacking him in the face.

My aunt told my cousin to use his words when he disagrees w/ someone else, and if that person begins to tease him, to continue use his words and not get physical. In the event that the other boy gets physical, go and tell the teacher or another adult. My uncle was thinking about getting my cousin in a self defense class. I thought my uncle was over-reacting but also disagreed w/ my aunt. Was wondering what some of you thought. Do you have different advice or do you think this kind of thing doesn’t even require advice.

I think that your cousin needs to fight back when physically assaulted, but a self defense class is unnecessary. Back when I was in kindergarten, my neighbor was a bully as well. My dad sat me down one day and told me how to make a fist and how and when to use it. All went well from there.

So your cousin teased another kid and got put on his ass. Sounds like he got what he asked for.
Edit-Just saw he was teased first. Still, he chose to escalate the issue at recess. The self-defense class is a bit much.
