On the Smoltz/Alexander thing, not the most knowledgable about it since I was 4 or so at the time, but in defense of it:

The Tigers were in contention for the playoffs and wanted to win then. He pitched very well and got them into the playoffs. Obviously if they knew what Smoltz was it wouldn't be worth it, but he was still a prospect then right? He obviously had a lot of potential but there's a substantially greater number of young pitchers with great potential that wind up very good or better, so it's not on it's face an absurd trade.

[/ QUOTE ]

Alexander went 9-0 with an ERA of 1.53 for a Tigers team that had to make a miraculous comeback to beat the Toronto Blue Jays. I'd say that part of it worked out. On top of that, Smoltz didn't have his breakthrough until 1988. In 1987 he had 86 K's and 81 BB in 130 IP, altbeit at age 20 in AA. That particular Tigers/Braves deal was similar to this one in that at the time it was a win for both teams.

Does this trade mean Boston doesn't have to eat anymore of Rentawrecks salary?

That's a good question. If they do still have to pay, I wonder if that money goes to Detroit or Atlanta?

I'm pretty disappointed as a Braves fan. Can we atleast spend the difference on SP.

Probable starters for next year.

SP-Hudson
SP-Smoltz
SP-?
SP-?
SP-?

[/ QUOTE ]
You do know the Braves got a starting pitcher in this deal, right?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, with what, 7 starts past the AA level? You can't really pencil him into the rotation yet.

[/ QUOTE ]

No way the Braves traded Renteria for a SP they werent penciling in to the rotation.

Atlanta improved much more than Detroit, and as constructed right now I'd say the Braves are better favs than the Tigers to make the playoffs.
