Default Beat: talking to my brother about poker...

Via MSN. He (Rob) is currently in Norway for an army expedition. Long-ish but entertaining. We start talking poker...

Steve says:
k are you tight aggressive?

Rob says:
tight mean goin all in?

Steve says:
LOL

Steve says:
man wtf

Steve says:
what sort of hands do you play in early position?

Rob says:
i dnt kno do i

Rob says:
mate if i got a decent hand ie royal and high kicker i go in if that makes sense?

Steve says:
huh?

Steve says:
as in a face card with an ace?

Steve says:
sorry dnt mean to be patronising

Rob says:
right, the first two cards i get, say a ace an a 10, i will call an raise etc

Steve says:
thats bad

Rob says:
but what if i get an ace?

Rob says:
y? theyr gud cards

Steve says:
k think about what your opponent is open raising with - probably better than AT, so even when you make a hand such as top pair they're going to have a better hand like AQ or AK - AT has reverse implied odds meaning you will lose lots of money over the long run calling raises with it

Rob says:
dumbed down?

Steve says:
when you call a raise with AT somebody will have a better hand usually and you get stacked

Rob says:
thyr rare tho, wat if a 6 an a queen

Steve says:
dude that's complete trash

Steve says:
what the [censored]

Steve says:
what sort of hands are you looking to make with Q6o?

Rob says:
nothin but if u aint gonna play a 10, ace wat the [censored] u expectin a ryal flush ev hand?!

Steve says:
no, i'd rather have 67 suited than ATo

Rob says:
so ud play 7, 8 spades?

Steve says:
with AT you'll either win a v small pot or lose a huge one -yeah, in no limit hands like that are good, small pairs too

Rob says:
fair one

Steve says:
stuff where you can make concealed hands where people lose stacks

Steve says:
say with 78s you call a raise and flop 77A

Rob says:
eh?

Steve says:
someody with AK is going to go broke and you have trips

Rob says: ah ok

Steve says:
with 78s they won't be able to put you on that hand easily

Rob says:
luck dependent tho?

Steve says:
no

Steve says:
not at all - they have "implied odds"

Rob says:
if u got 7.8s thyr more likely to have higher cards whichl beat u\

Steve says:
you invest a small %age of money preflop hoping to flop a monster hand

Rob says:
an the flop prob wont giv u trips

Steve says:
yeah but when it does, you'll win a huge pot to compensate all the times you fold on the flop

Steve says:
lose a small pot or win a huge one

Rob says:
not guarenteed

Steve says:
that's important in NL

Steve says:
dude

Steve says:
say you lose 7 small pots with 78s, and win one HUGE one

Steve says:
you make up all those small losses and then make some on top

Steve says:
poker is long term

Rob says:
so basically, go 4 lower numbers wen u gamble

Steve says:
gamble?

Rob says:
put in

Steve says:
you invest a tiny %age of your stack preflop

Steve says:
not go all in with it

Rob says:
raise wateva

Rob says:
i know

Steve says:
not just "low numbers" lol, you want to play hands that can win somebodys stack

Steve says:
you play no limit right?

Rob says:
within reason

Steve says:
huh?

Rob says:
u can go all in yeh

Steve says:
dude i'll teach you when you get back

Rob says:
wicked cuz my luck bin poo recently

That's probably why he's in the military and not pwning the poker world. But I respect him more for his service.

i hate phrases like "this hand wins you small pots and loses big ones, or this hand you don't lose a lot if you miss but can stack someone if you hit" because those statements are usually completely irrelevant/inapplicable.
