Indeed, Black Tie is Tuxedo. If you are referring to a black tie, I know that it and silver are considered nice for occasions not formal enough for true black tie. Great to look a little nicer without going over the top.

Personally I would never wear a black tie except as part of "Black Tie" attire.

I have to agree with this. Although, you could get away with a much more narrow black tie, like the ones they are wearing in that Reservoir Dogs picture.
