What is the cost of wiring? Is it $20-$30?

Typically around $30. Bellagio will wire money back to your bank account or cut you a check free of charge at the end of your trip. Call the hotel and ask to speak to the cage to get wiring instructions and other information.

iirc, this usually takes a day or two, so do it in advance.

also, if you are on a direct flight to las vegas with $10k in your pocket, no one is going to think you are smuggling heroin or something. carrying this amount of money these days is pretty typical.

The seizing of large amounts of cash by law enforcement has been a problem for years. If they take it, you basically have to prove it didn't come from illegal activities, which can be very hard to do. It all comes out of the drug wars. This article from 1990 shows how long the problem has been around.

I hesitate to think the end result of your cash if you admitted to winning it in online poker.

I would go maybe half and half with cash and traveler's checks. Last time I went a took a bankroll of only 2k (not that big of a roller) and split it and everything went fine. I didn't even need the cashiers checks because I never got stuck that much.

However, I went to cash my checks at the cage of the Rio just to get the money a couple of days before I left and they looked at me like an alien that they had never seen them before. It took some time signing all of the checks, but I got my money with no problem.

I regularly carry 6-8K in my pockets, yep split them in two for both front pockets, I have never had any hassle and I take several trips a year

BTW, I believe they can only confiscate an amount over the 10K, for example if you were to get hassled for 12K they could only confiscated the 2K,,,that is my understanding,,,

Can anybody point at specific statutes or regulations? So far it's all rumor and old articles. I'm positive I remember once (like at least 5 years ago) coming across some interstate transportation of cash >$10K rule, but my last couple attempts to find such a thing in federal law have come up dry. It's a fuzzy memory, but I think there was just some federal form you were supposed to file prior to traveling.

So... who has specifics?

You have a good memory. Early versions of the Patriot Act proposed amending 18 USC 1957 to make interstate transportation of >$10K illegal IF the person knew the money came from an unlawful activity or was to be used in an unlawful activity. This did not make it into the final version which was passed.
