Hands down its the niagara region where you have three casinos with multi limit and NL games and some tournies.

I live near windsor .. action has dropped considerably with the weak US dollar and downturn in auto and manufacturing sectors. There is still action to be had .. but not as juicy as it was a couple years ago. Uncapped 10-20NL usually runs Fri and Sat. Haven't seen limit other than 3-6 (which always runs) there in a long time. I think they run a round for round Omaha/Holdem game still .. either Wed or Thur nights. Morning tourneys at ~10:00am either 50 or 100 buyin depending on the day of the week. (60 people I think) Monthly(last friday of month) 500 buyin still runs I think as well. They were spreading sit-n-gos for a while .. but the last couple of times I have been there they were not filling up.

Fallsview and casino niagara have the benefit of pulling (non poker player) tourists in and they give the games a shot (at least in the summer months). Also the nature of the area, very tourist oriented seems to give people there a healthy disregard for the value of money. As such the games there are much looser, and there is much more aggression.

There is no such "tourist" factor in Windsor and the casual players have thinned out quite a bit.

I can't speak first hand about Calgary or Edmonton - but keep in mind the economy out there is booming right now. They are paving the streets with gold to bring in trades people to work on oil and gas resources. Some of that boom must be finding its way to the poker rooms.

Calgary has quite a bit of action. Besides the prevalent 1/2 NL and 4/8 FL, there's 15/30, 30/60 FL Holdem and an occasional 5/10/25 DC game at Elbow River. There's a regular 5/5 NL game at Deerfoot and I hear the 5/10 NL goes weekly too. There's a 2/5 NL DC at Casino Calgary and a weekly 5/5 NL Holdem at Cash Casino.

Edmonton has almost no action. It's almost all 1/2 NL and 3/6 FL. Apparently they have a scheduled 15/30 and an occasional 5/5 NL DC game.

I usually play at River Cree (Edmonton). Of course there are the ubiquitous tables of 1/2 NL and 3/6 FL on the weekend; at least those wait lists move regularly. The 2/5 NL Hold'em game has been going on for the last couple of weekends and they're hoping to make that a regular. Considering the wait list didn't move for four hours when I was last there ... there are a lot of committed people who want to play it. There's also a 5/5 PL DC game going on Friday/Saturday nights, which is about 95% Omaha. Occasionally, they can get a 5/10 NL game going, but that's been rare in my experience. The Yellowhead and Argyll try to run the 15/30 FL games; haven't seen them try to start that at River Cree on a Friday. I haven't seen a stud game going in Edmonton but it's on the board at Argyll and Yellowhead ...

Problem with Stud is the rake is so much higher than holdem. Good to know about River Cree. Is it only on weekends that this game is running? If I'm here on a Wednesday evening, what's my best bet for player in a bigger game?

Your best bet would be Yellowhead or Argyll for a high-limit game.

I'm somewhat restricted in the nights I am able to play ... so I'm usually only trolling for games on a Friday or Saturday. If you're playing higher games, I'd call ahead to find out whether Yellowhead or Argyll are hosting a bigger game. Baccarat, Palace and Century have never had large games (when I've been there).

The other nice thing about River Cree is that smoking is allowed indoors; it is a more popular room for the smokers because they don't have to go outside to smoke as they would at any of the casinos in city limits. A much bigger deal in the winter than the summer, of course. The smoking room is segregated from the tables, but they can see when the blinds are approaching them from their little smoking cage. (Can you tell I'm a non-smoker?)

Yads, I just moved to Calgary and was wondering if you could elaborate on the games a bit.

When you say a weekly 5/10nl game. Does that mean it often runs like once weekly on the busiest nights like Friday or Saturday? I'm assuming the games are soft, but how soft?

Also, I'm not familar with DC. I know it means dealer choice, but how's that work and which games does it usually involve?

Finally, what are the min/max buy-in's to these games? Like the 5/5nl and 5/10nl?
