I dont think it is really overkill. Especially if you run a bunch of apps while playing. You should be able to play any game if you chooose with the system and you can add a second graphicd card if you really need it.

Yeah, you could get by with less, I have an E6700 system at work and home and love it.

If you want to save some money drop the 10K HDD, but you may see some gains with PT, but I don't know for sure.

I think for regular use, the e6550 will provide plenty for him and he saves like $600.
