Root Down - sampled by Beastie Boys, original by Jimmy Smith

It sticks in my head for days every time it comes up on the ipod.

A lot of the best bassists (technically) don't really play any phat beats. It's just loads of quick slap solos, nothing meaty. They lose track of what the bass is supposed to do.

I recommend you check out a lot of Motown songs, anything in which James Jamerson played on.

Muse have the odd good bassline.

As you already mentioned, Paul Macca is an excellent, and underated bassist, check out 'Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me and My Monkey' by The Beatles and also 'Hey Bulldog'.

John Entwhistle of The Who was awesome, and not just because he shares a birthday with John Lennon and me.

James Brown yo.

Also, some John Lee Hooker songs have great basslines in them.

"Starless" by King Crimson. One of the greatest songs ever written in my opinion. Well, the instrumental part is, the lyrics are so-so. The middle section has one of the most sinister basslines ever. Between that and the guitar, it's a must listen, especially for prog rock fans.

[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] Crimson, I would have listed Easy Money, but I couldn't find a decent version on You Tube.

Over The Falls by Primus is very juicy.
