Default Good Cookbooks

Does anyone know of any good cookbooks for beginners? I've checked amazon but the list is huge and don't know which to buy.

Thanks

Joy of Cooking is standard.

Beyond that, I'm a fan of Jamie Oliver's Italy book:

I just recently got Alton Brown's Cookbook.

http://www.amazon.com/Im-Just-Here-F...dp/158479559X/

The sections are separated by cooking method with pretty good explanations for each. I've only made it a little way through, but it seems really good so far.

"How To Cook Everything: Simple Recipes for Great Food" by Mark Bittman. The paperback version is less than $15 on Amazon. You may want to check your local library as well. Most libraries have huge cookbook collections.
