POKERSPOT CONTROVERSY
Prior to his professional poker career, Boyd was the President and co-founder of the Pokerspot online poker cardroom, which operated from May 2000 to late 2001. When Pokerspot ceased operations, the cardroom did not refund $400,000 of player funds. A substantial controversy has arisen from actions taken by Boyd and the staff of PokerSpot during this time.
According to Boyd, in January 2001 Pokerspot's credit card processor was late in transferring player funds to Pokerspot. As a result, Pokerspot did not have all the player funds that were being used at their site. Eventually this resulted in Pokerspot being shorted 6 weeks of credit card deposits, which Pokerspot could not cover. Players were unable to cash out, and eventually the site shut down. [5]
When financial problems began with Pokerspot, players who called PokerSpot customer support requesting withdrawal of their deposited funds were told many different stories, ranging from a 30-business-day hold to a promise that their checks were "already in the mail." In an online newsgroup in November 2002, Boyd admitted that players had been deceived. Boyd stated that he told his Customer Support staff to, "... spin it so that the players don't feel the need to make a mad rush on the cardroom OR the need to tell everyone they know that Pokerspot [is] going to hell in a handbasket. Spin it so that the players continue to just keep on playing." [6]
Boyd also angered many players by regularly sending e-mails and posting on the rec.gambling.poker newsgroup in 2000 and 2001, stating that PokerSpot would "make good on all pending cashouts." [7] As of 2007, this promise has not been fulfilled.
There is a disagreement regarding a potential PokerSpot buyout offer that might or might not have refunded all money deposited by former PokerSpot players. Although there is agreement that a buyout deal was discussed, there is disagreement over the identity of the online casino offering to buy the PokerSpot software and assets. Russ Boyd, who has never named a particular buyer, claims that the buyer reneged on an offer that would have returned all of the players' money, and that he refused the new deal in order to pursue other buyout options, which later also fell through. [8] In a newgroup posting in 2007, Russ's brother Robert Boyd claimed that CyberWorld Group/Golden Palace reneged after hiring away PokerSpot's lead developer.[9]
Prior to Robert Boyd's posting, Burton Ritchie claimed that Boyd reneged on the deal (which he says would have refunded all outstanding player debt and paid an additional $200,000 for Boyd himself) because the deal contained a non-competitive clause, effectively forcing Boyd to leave the internet casino industry for a period of 2 or 3 years. [10] These claims have never been legally settled.
In January 2005, Boyd claimed on his blog to have already refunded a small amount of money to some former PokerSpot players. [11] This claim, however, has not been confirmed.
When Boyd was the chip leader for a short time at the main event of the 2003 World Series of Poker, he was asked if he would pay back the Pokerspot players with any prize money that he won. Boyd said, "If I win this tournament, I will pay off all the players. Anything less than that, I can't do it." [9] Boyd placed 12th in the tournament, earning $80,000. [12]

Gaboon, if you were smart enough to use the search feature you'd know whats going on with dutch (acting like an idiot, peeing off of balcony's and just continuing to be the excuse making scumbag he's always been).

Nobody else knows cause nobody cares (sort of like your posts). They're like traffic accidents everybody looks because they want to see what wreckage looks like.

Typical lawyer ethics.

[/ QUOTE ]

Wrong on at least 2 counts. First, he isn't really a lawyer. Just a law student who I am not sure even took a bar exam and was licensed. Kudos for graduating law school at any age, but there is more than that to be considered a lawyer. Second, typical lawyers are ethical. Sure, some suck, but don't paint us all with such a broad brush.

Typical lawyer ethics about lawyer ethics.

You make an absolute statement--that I'm wrong on at least two counts--while admittedly being unable to prove either one .. "who I am not sure even took a bar exam" .. "typical lawyers are ethical. Sure, some suck, but don't paint us all with such a broad brush."

No one paints you with a broad brush you do that all too well yourselves.

[ QUOTE ]
I met Dutch when he first came to Las Vegas. I am hard of hearing a little and when he said his name was Russ, I thought he said Dutch. I introduced him around the World Series of Poker as Dutch. We played together quit a bit in the 2,5 no-limit Hold 'em. We shared some meals and hung out. I took an immediate liking to Dutch. I showed him some cheater's moves to watch out for. Dutch laughed at that since he had studied magic as a kid. He showed me the amazing chip tricks he later did on TV in the World Series the year after I met him. Dutch was on a very skinny bankroll since he had gone broke on that Internet deal. He was only twenty. He made a big mistake and he knows it.

Most of our conversation had to do with why someone so intelligent with a law degree would rather be a professional poker player. Meeting Dutch and his crew opened my eyes to the revolution and dominance of the twentysomethings in tournament poker. While we were playing together, Dutch went off to play a satellite for the World Series. He asked me if I wanted half his action. I told him, "I don't put in with nubbins." We had been having a lot of fun talking and joking at the poker table. This enormous black man, easily north of 350 pounds, who introduced himself only as "Big" threw in with Dutch. We all sweated it out but Dutch got knocked out. The next year he went on to the final two tables and lots of TV fame.

The year after that, Dutch got down to three handed in the Razz event against T.J.Cloutier and Howard Lederer. Dutch's "crew" of Bret, Scott, Joe, and some others were loudly cheering for Dutch. I was too. Now all those guys I have mentioned have won bracelets, including Dutch.

I knew the fast money, hard living, and Las Vegas nights would take a toll on some of these young gamblers. Does that shock you? Recently, Dutch admitted he had bipolar problems and sought treatment. Let us all give him a chance to find himself. He who has never been stoned should caste the first rock.

If you knew Dutch, you would like him. How many of you would like the worst things you said spread out there on the wooly wide web? I like Dutch but it is sure all right with me if you do not. Some of my friends are for him and some of my friends are against him and I am for my friends.

I like your posts Johnny as usual, just be careful hanging around with known thieves. I had a friend who was promised by Boyd that he would be paid back and despite all of Boyd's successes he knows he never will be.

His "bipolar" disorder is also not an excuse for some of his behavior, and that is coming from someone who has bipolar.
