I ate peanut butter and mayo sandwiches for a while as a kid before realizing they weren't very good. I think I was just happy to have invented something, even if it pretty much sucked.

The spaetzle is always tough, no suessenf, etc. The last time I drove to St. Louis I went to a small German market and looked around. I ordered a bunch of stuff including wurst, senf, and knoedel. When I ordered the wurst, this old guy standing by the counter asked me in German if I came from the south of Germany. I told him no that but I'd lived there, and we talked a bit. Later my gf asked what we'd said and I told her, "Oh, he asked if I was from the south." She started laughing and said, "I guess you've been in Nashville long enough that the southern accent is leaking into your German!" I actually think there are a lot of parallels between Bavaria and the US south. Hospitality and gemuetlichkeit are practically the same thing.

This:
 It has several names in Norwegian. Raspeballer, klubb, komle are some. They are grated, raw potatoes that are mashed together with flour and salt into little balls and boiled. This is the most delicious thing ever. Often served with bacon and mashed swedish cabbage (like here), and often with mutton in stead of the sausage. And there has to be lots and lots of bacon fat. Maybe steam a carrot if you're feeling like a health freak. I like putting a little ketchup on them as well. (But my parents look at me like I engage in blasphemy when I do.) I don't know how this compares to what you call dumplings, but I recommend trying this (though most people hate it the first time they try). Must be served with cold milk. and this:  This is lutefisk. Or directly translated, lye-fish. I don't know how well this fits the criteria of you not having heard of it. Living in Norway I feel like every foreigner has heard of this, but I could be brainwashed by the nationalist propaganda. It's cod, soaked in a combination of cold water and caustic soda for something like a day or two, until it gets a jelly-like consistency. This is to be served with potatoes, bacon, mashed peas and norwegian potato liquor. Neither lutefisk nor Norwegian potato liquor is any good, even most Norwegians will testify to that, so this I don't really recommend trying. I still eat it at least every christmas, though.

 This is mämmi! Mämmi (pronounced ['mæm.mi] in IPA) is a Finnish traditional Easter dessert, a malt porridge which is baked in an oven. It is made of water, malt and rye flour and is dark brown in appearance. Spices such as Bitter orange peel, syrup or molasses and orange rind are often added. After the exposure to heat and several days of storage in the refrigerator, small quantities of generated alcohol often result within the puddinglike condiment. This is not considered a fault. [/ QUOTE ] Well, that's bad wording on my part. They aren't really mashed, it's a stew. Soak in water over the night, rinse, add new water, salt and a little butter, let cook till it is a stew.
