Also, has Whiz et al ever gone for two after scoring a TD down by 14? If he has done that a few times, then I'm willing to get on board the "Whiz is one of the few coaches who actually cares about maximizing wins no matter how unconventional it might be" bandwagon.

this hasn't been shown to increase winrate

seriously, though, AZ screwed up twice in this game
they had 2nd and 5 at the SF 9 in OT and then got a delay of game as they tried to set-up a FG (which they shanked of course)...why not continue to run the offense?

Ok, I just saw your objection to this in the other thread. Pretend I asked about something else that most coaches do most of the time but that isnt correct.

2 point conversion is from the 2 and a half yard-line.
I believe the ball was inside the 1 on this play.

I don't know if they were 75%. But they definitely had to be better than a 50% 2-pt conversion rate because of just having the QB or RB dive into the pile for the score which really isn't a realistic option from 2+ yds out.

[/ QUOTE ]

The conversion happens from the 2 yard line, not the 2.5.

[/ QUOTE ]

In the NFL it's at the 2 yard line. In college it's at the 3 yard line.

Only twice.

They also had poor clock management at the end of regulation. Their punter made a 17 yard punt in OT. (Note that the punter (who also made the mistake of getting the delay of game penalty) has been released.)

They also made many stupid mistakes on the last series of the game:

1) the kick returner attempted to run back from the 2, instead of letting it go to the end zone.

2) he was bailed out by making a good return, but a teammate blocked in the back (for the second time in the game).

3) they called a pass on 1st down from their own 3.

4) 6 blockers couldn't handle 4 pass rushers on the final play.

According to Easterbrook, Herm got slammed for not going for the tie.

They weren't taking into account why you play the game.

Sports is the only area of society where such mistakes are so open to the public and so blindly passed over.

These are all player mistakes, except for 3) and I argued on the Cardinal thread that 3) might not have been a mistake since it can be argued that if the Cards don't make a first down there they will lose the game. Their soon to be released punter was at the bottom of the league in punting, had shanked his last (easy) punt, their punt blocking was poor, so kicking backed up in the end zone would produce a high likelihood of a shank or a blocked punt. A shank immediately puts SF in make-able FG range, a block is game over. Even a good punt leaves SF in decent FG range.

Running on first down into a run defense is likely to leave you in 2nd and 8th or worse. Then you will be forced to throw during an obvious passing down while your QB is still in the end zone.

Warner had thrown for 480 yards, his receivers were dominant. I think Wiz figured that it was likely Warner would be forced to throw from the end zone, so why not do it on first down against a run defense.
