Default Shaving: Another old man question for OOT at large...

Since I've gotten into triathlon I've read a great deal about my fellow triathletes shaving, generally chest and legs (legs more, because of road rash on the bike). So I'm looking at Target, and I see a plethora of body shaving products aimed at men. Clearly there are not that many swimmers, cyclists and triathletes around, so just how prevalent is shaving. When I was in college, body shaving would likely have meant you were, well, not that there's anything wrong with that...

Since OOT is my source for all information about people in their 20s, I gotta ask, is shaving all that typical?

I shave my chest every now and then, but it's mostly because I only have a little patch of bs on my sternum. It just doesn't look right if I don't.

I shave, fwiw, but I'm a runner, so there...
You shave because of the massages, it hurts if you have hair and the masseuse always "pulls" them, during massage.
also, if you fall, the wound closes up quicker if there aren't any hairs.

That thread is what led me to post this poll. Would have been better as three separate polls by age. Oh well...

I use to be a cyclist so I shaved my legs, however I always laughed at anyone who gave these reasons as the reason they did it (Which are like the only actually benefits of doing it). Unless you are on some pro level team or have the greatest GF in the world you arent getting messages after rides, and in several years of riding my bike, I only had 2 wrecks, neither of which resulted in road rash on my legs. Mountain bikers actually get road rash all the time, and none of them shave their legs.

The simple fact is you shave your legs because it's the stylish thing to do, because everyone else is doing it. It makes you feel like you are part of something "look at me, Im a cyclist", and cuz it makes you feel all bad ass and sleek and sexy. Stop lying to yourself and claiming its for any other reason.

edit: I'm not directing this directly at you marvel, for all I know you are some pro, im just saying in general

I'm 49 and living proof man decended from the ape. Hair grows everywhere except on my head. For hygiene purposes I use a clipper. Much easier than shaving.
