sometimes I split 10s when the dealer has 5 or 6. how much EV is this loosing?

[/ QUOTE ]
A little less than 1/4 of the bet size on each hand where you split tens against a 6, more against a 5. The strategy table at http://www.beatingbonuses.com/blackjack.htm shows blending colors when the difference in expected value is below 0.15 . This is not one of those points.

I was sitting at a blackjack table in Vegas when this guy went to split 10's. This little old lady looks at him and says "If you had a 12 inch [censored] would you split that too?"

10-10 vs 6 has an EV of +.70 when you stand and when you split your ev is +.47. So you still win more then you lose when you split, but not as much as you would for just standing.

Here's something I've always wondered. Do you surrender two 8s against a 10 or are they supposed to be split?

Under typical online BJ rules, splitting has a slight edge. Some may consider this difference negligible, and may prefer surrendering to reduce risk of a big loss.

The expected loss from splitting is ~-0.48.
The expected loss from surrendering is -0.5.

The added EV of re-hitting when you draw a 2-4 on values 7 and 8 are overwhelmingly positive over the marginal EV of having doubled your bet when you draw a 10, far more so than having an extra bet in when you have a pat hand 12-16 against the dealer 5-6.
