Get a rental car. Forget the shuttle unless you're really on a budget...If you catch me there I guess I could give you a ride back to the airport for a nominal fee...just kiddin'.

FWIW, I don't know how Vegas/AC/etc is but the coffee down there comes out of a friggin' carboard box. Don't know why y'all are worried about creamers & such since you're drinking coffee that ain't even brewed.

2.) Some people seem to think the food in Tunica is fantastic, and others think it is disgusting. By and large, what does this food consist of? I generally like meaty/fatty foods, but obviously not if it is very low quality.

I'm no Steamboatin' , but....

1) Grand Casino buffet withstood multiple visits without getting vile.
2) Gold Strike buffet never seemed to please me, but I cannot define why.
3) Gold Strike < Horseshoe < Grand Casino

I was actually pretty happy with the tableside food service at the Strike, despite the 2nd hand smoke. Sorry if I held up play, but I was going to fold anyhow.

just MHO.

Second hand smoke?? You musta been by one of the entrances. Usually the smokiness there is at a minimum compared to the Horseshoe & Sam's Town.

It's all relative. While you'll almost never have sombody lighting up at your table (mgmt will stop 'em), the slot machine zone air will find its way into the poker room, and there's often enough smokers to affect the air. It's still cleaner air than any poker joint in Michigan, for example.

Nick:
1. Not used it, but, prolly fine. However, if you want to max out on convenience and you want to visit other casinos, then, suggest renting car. The new I-69 connects I-55, dumping you right at the Grand's front door. This avoids some of the old route's rougher Highway 61 areas north of Tunica. Casinos are pretty spread out across the cotton fields. A private ($$)shuttle exists, never used it & not sure about times etc.

2. The only person I have ever heard that doesn't like the food in Tunica is Daniel Negreanu. I have eaten all over the world, from fancy schmancy redic $$$$ to Made Rites & can assure you it is hard to find food you will not like, and lots of it, in Tunica casinos.

3. Most def both sweet/unsweet - but ask to confirm - drank tons & they make it right (none of that funky stale crap, you know what I am talking about)

Probably a good thing, I don't think 2+2 could stand two of me.

I have eaten at the Horseshoe Buffet on two different trips. The first time, I thought it was highly overated and didn't like the food at all. The second time it was one of the best buffets ever, so there seems to be some variance.

I have eaten at the Goldstrike's Buffet numerous times and liked it just fine.

I ate at Sam's Town buffet once and was able to pull off the World Famous Seafood Buffet Angleshoot, go in at the end of lunch, eat slow and get fresh hot seafood as they change over for Friday night. YMMV

I ate at the Grand's Buffet once and it was well within the acceptable range.

1.) I have heard there is a shuttle from the Memphis airport to the casino. Has anyone taken this, and is it an efficient way to get there and back?

[/ QUOTE ]

If you're going to be there a while, and especially if you're staying at the grand, a car may be worth it. The grand is off by itself, and while there is a shuttle to the Horseshoe, it only runs once an hour and I don't think it's 24/7.

You'll like it. The buffet at the grand is more than decent. The sports bar at the grand has excellent hamburgers.

The buffet at the Horseshoe is much better, though. And the Horseshoe snack bar is HEAVEN if you like meat and fat. ZOMG.

[ QUOTE ]
3.) If I order iced tea at the restaurants/buffets, am I only going to be able to get the sweet kind? This may sound silly, but I really don't like sweet drinks, so I order iced tea just about everywhere I am not drinking beer, and have sometimes been frustrated when traveling in the South.

[/ QUOTE ]

Most places, they'll ask you sweet or unsweet. Some will just assume sweet. But everywhere has unsweet tea, just be specific and you're fine.

MMMMM.... HIJACK!

Did you know you can mail order these now? They're not quite the same frozen then warmed in your microwave, but they're still pretty good.

I agree, the 'Shoe and Gold Strike appear to be the only rooms with any sort of game selection.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is not true when the Grand is hosting a WSOP-Circuit event though. They add extra tables and the game-selection there is pretty solid during this time.

The air-conditioning at those tables at the Grand can be REALLY wacky. It can be 95 degrees outside but you'll practically need a jacket in there. This is not an exaggeration. I like the A/C to be CRANKED up but my hands were trembling in there during the last 2 or 3 WSOP-C events I attended.

I highly recommend renting a car instead of trying to take some over-priced shuttle from the airport.
Couple of additional reasons besides the over-priced shuttleness involves the layout of Tunica.

If you are staying at a hotel at the Grand you will almost certainly be staying at one of the hotels which is NOT at the casino. They have two hotels that are WAY away from the casino and are not reasonable walking distance.

You can either deal with taking one of their shuttles from the hotel to the casino or you can have your own rental car and drive yourself which is probably prefferable.

There are some shuttles which run from Grand down the Horseshoe but they are kind of inconvenient I believe and do not run 24 hours. Cabs are not a realistic option there.
You will likely want to check out the poker-rooms at the Horseshoe and Gold Strike.
Even while all the tourney stuff is going on at the Grand I promise that the action at Horseshoe and Gold Strike should be pretty good too and possibly preferrable.

You can't walk there. Shuttle-ing there is not always convenient. Having your own car is definitely the better way to go.

I also suspect that a cheap rental will end up costing less than having to shuttle 2 times (to the casino...and back ot the airport).

The steak-house at the Horseshoe is definitely worth checking out. But the one at the Gold Strike is almost as good. If Horseshoe steakhouse is rated about a 9.1 then Gold Strike's is rated about an 8.9
