G.P.A if your not going to grad school

That's interesting because the minimum GPA for the Finance major at my school is a 3.3.

i'm guessing you're all talking about cumulative gpa. what about people with upward trends/rocky first years who then did well?

that's pretty much where I'm at, and while my gpa will probably wind up in the 3.0-3.3 range, I'm wondering how forgiving most employers are of a bad freshman year, improvement, etc.

also, aside from the networking advantages, do employers generally know/care about the difference in a state school vs. a top 10-15 lac?

There are a small group of employers that will only recruit from top schools (Big Banks, Trading Groups) and the rest don't really care as much.

If you stand out enough you can have a shot at a job anywhere. I know a few people that got recruited to Goldman Sachs from Penn State, but obviously they were exceptional.

usually your degree doesnt even matter as much as work experiance so if u have a sub par gpa, id say just get out in the real world and get some experiance.

youre not stuck at whatever job you start out at and many people change companies and even industries after there first few years and gpa will get less and less important as you go so just do your best in school and at your job and youll be good to go

Everyone saying GPA doesn't matter is pretty out of it, atleast in the finance field. Your goal coming out of school is to land interviews. Many employers (atleast most ones you would actually want to work at) screen resumes for GPA. If your GPA doesn't exceed the cutoff, into the trash pile. This is not true in all cases, and good internship experience can offset a bad GPA.

That said, after your first job, work experience is much more important. However, there is still a cumulative effect. If your first job sucks, because your GPA sucked, well, your next job may only be one pip higher (whereas your first job out of school would have skipped this tier if you had a good GPA). Is this a golden rule? No, but you get the point: a good GPA gives you an excellent chance to accelerate your career.

Once you land an interview, GPA doesn't mean much.

Agreed, but a 3.3 to a 2.9 is a huge difference.
