Heated Exchange with 24hr Fitness front desk guy WTF

So I goto 24 hour fitness early this morning b/c I can't sleep all night. I get there at maybe 4am the place is completely empty. Maybe one or two geriatrics walking on the treadmill but its dead.

So I arrive and open my gym-bag at the counter and say "Oh [censored], forgot my pass, here is my ID can you look me up?"

Gym guy (late 20s/early 30s dude with mullet/not happy with life direction etc...) says: "What the hell, why can't people just remember to bring their IDs, you know how much time this takes from me?"

(I assume his wiping down the desk and reading magazine time)

Me says "Yea I know, life is hard."

Gym guy "One time only man..." (and hands me back my drivers license after approx 11 seconds of typing/clicking)

Me: "Tough job I see..." (walks away)



So...am I in the twilight zone or does this guy really reserve the right to be a dick, or did I just catch this guy on a bad hair day. WTF? I swear to christ my patience in humanity is decreasing at an exponential level daily.

Obviously the guy was being an ass, but...

...this exchange didn't come off "heated" at all. I guess you had to be there. I could see all of this being joking/sarcastic rather than actually irritable/angry.

I'm not doubting you, just that when you type it out it actually sounds funnier rather than a big deal.

yea he wasn't trying to be funny. I'm not good at writing screenplays to convey tone but he was definitely scoffing and rolling his eyes being a complete douche with his first response.

i guess my retort wasn't really friendly but whatever, I'm a [censored] customer gawdamit, $55.month I pay these bastards. And yes a red carpet would be nice every once in a blue moon.
