Re: Prs to be making me less broke? Financial Follies
There's nothing wrong with the attitude Anacardo seems to have if you can, you know, actually live that way. How you can want to get by without ever being in the controls of the Man, being another worker drone, and still run up a [censored] load of debts is beyond me.
Forgive me for repeating what everyone else is saying, but you [censored] up your opportunity to be free and do as you please. You can't be picky anymore. Now you've got to suck it up and just take the highest paying job available no matter how miserable it makes your existence. Better that for a couple years than something barely acceptable for 10+. Oh, and as plenty have said, sell your [censored] car that you were retarded for buying in the first place and buy a cheap beater or two. Also, never use or own credit cards again. After you've got all that [censored] paid off and a decent reserve of cash you can go on back to doing whatever the [censored] you please. And try not to [censored] it up next time. |

Why do you people continue to throw advice towards Anacardo.
You would do better to throw pennies down a well. |

Re: Prs to be making me less broke? Financial Follies
If you don't want to work for the Man, you need to develop your own expertise. Nobody here can tell you what your preferences are in terms of what expertise that might be, and asking others for that is simply folly. You may not yourself know what it might be, in which case my recommendation is to pick something, anything, that doesn't seem hellishly obnoxious. How about the undersea expedition guys that recently found a new wreck?
Of course, the way to develop expertise is to work for the Man for a while and figure out what he's doing wrong. I don't think you'll advance yourself by tutoring or working on a casino boat: both of those are dead-ends. If you can tolerate the Man for five years, someone of your obvious intellect should be able to figure out how to do it better, in which case you can strike out on your own. Part of striking out on your own is convincing others you can do it. Networking is therefore useful. Whining about how much you hate what you are doing is never, ever productive in this regard, so get used to sucking it up. You'll be surprised how fast your confidence can recover. |

ASSETS: Young (24), able-bodied. BA, University of Texas, 2004 - History. No criminal record, owns transportation, genius, probably the world's greatest casual conversationalist. [/ QUOTE ] EMPLOYMENT: Can you sell? If so, pick one or two industries, then find as many of those industries' companies in Atlanta that are reputable (esp. with training) and hit the pavement. In terms of potential income, sales is #1 for a generic bachelor's degree recipient. Also, these: http://atlanta.craigslist.org/edu/332972989.html http://atlanta.craigslist.org/edu/332935606.html HOUSING: Rent a room indefinitely. Avoid paying more than 30% of your pre-tax income on rent. FOOD: Eggs, tuna fish, chicken (whole or pieces), peanuts, cabbage, carrots, bananas, and apples are all very cheap sources of solid nutrition. The 4 collegiate food groups - ramen, hot dogs, pizza, and beer - aren't that great for you and the latter two are relatively expensive. BUDGETING: Pay off your credit card debt ASAP. Stick with the minimum payments on your student loans in the meantime. Consider selling your car if you can recoup enough to cover the outstanding debt + $1-2k cover for a beater car as previous posters have suggested. Good luck! |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] 8)gameshow - longshot but hey somebody gotta win [/ QUOTE ] Hell ya! I could see Cardo on Jeopardy! Trebec: And your Final Jeopardy category is the Aubrey-Maturin series Cardo: I bet it all! Ship it! [/ QUOTE ] Ana - my buddy just won ~$500k on "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader". I think you should do that. If that doesn't work out, grad school ftw? Just skimmed the thread so maybe this was brought up, but how are you not in grad school? Not law school, which I think I remember you said you hated, but some Phd program or something. That seems like the place for you, plenty of misanthropic soul-searching intellectual types for you to chill with. -Al [/ QUOTE ] Well, speaking only in history, my interest in grad school ended at my first introductory meeting on the subject, in which one of my TAs (cool cool guy btw) told me in no uncertain terms what I was expected to be interested in, who I was expected to be influenced by, who I was supposed to mention in my personal statement, etc. etc. etc. LOLz. What a racket! I would have to switch academic disciplines entirely to go back to school, and it's not like anything else is reaching out and grabbing me. [/ QUOTE ] You only had a bachelor's. Switching fields doesn't sound like a terribly hard thing to do even for people of pretty moderate intelligence, and yours is better than that. History can inform literature, political science, philosophy, economics, art, semiology, linguistics, sociology, even psychology. Probably lots of other ologys, too. You've hardly locked away all academic possibilities by choosing one for a bachelor's degree. |
