Justin Kruger and David Dunning Cornell University "People tend to hold overly favorable views of their abilities in many social and intellectual domains. The authors suggest that this overestimation occurs, in part, because people who are unskilled in these domains suffer a dual burden: Not only do these people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it. Across 4 studies, the authors found that participants scoring in the bottom quartile on tests of humor, grammar, and logic grossly overestimated their test performance and ability. Although their test scores put them in the 12th percentile, they estimated themselves to be in the 62nd. Several analyses linked this miscalibration to deficits in metacognitive skill, or the capacity to distinguish accuracy from error. Paradoxically, improving the skills of participants, and thus increasing their metacognitive competence, helped them recognize the limitations of their abilities."

These deluded souls are a worse infliction upon us all.

This is because we often can't understand things that are "smarter" than us, but can easily see when someone does or says something dumb. In other words, I'll start everyone off with like a 140 IQ, and just deduct points for every dumb thing I hear them say or see them do*. It's easier this way than starting at 100 and working "up". Of course some people don't say much or do much so it's tricky. *This is probably a really dumb way to guage intelligence, and I should deduct 5 IQ points for utilizing this method.

The topic of gambling brings out the worst in people when it comes to thinking they are intelligent when in reality they know nothing.
"I win every time I got to the casino," "I have a system for XXXX" "I rarely lose" "Sometimes you gotta just call with any 2" "I had pot odds" "I win at slot machines"
