Default Jobs in Vegas

Can anyone tell me what the job market is like in Las Vegas? I'm not talking about being a dealer. I'm talkign professional jobs like I.T. jobs or something like that. I would assume that the casinos have IT teams and are constantly needing help. Anyone have any experience here?

Predator314,

I read your blog all the time. Thinking about moving to Vegas. Sounds real cool. IT during the day and poker at night. Sounds like the life. I was in IT for awhile.

There is obviously some. The casinos need folks to make the networks and PC's go. And their corporate offices need a few people. And Shufflemaster and the like need people. UNLV and the community colleges hire a few tech weenies. There's a fair pile of DOD-related work, too, if you have a clearance and particularly if you're into spending 3 days in the desert camping with the troops running the latest Top Secret whizbang gizmo Rockwell produced.

But I've run into exactly 0 local IT people at the poker tables; they may be there, but in random conversations nobody has ever said "I live in Vegas and I'm an IT person". As a percentage of the job market, it's tiny. It's just not a technocentric area like DC, SillyValley, Boston, Research Triangle, Seattle, etc.

I've been searching the IT job market off and on for years because I wouldn't mind living there. Basically, that market sucks. There are a handful of jobs there, but if you do get a job there, it's likely the only one you'll be able to find there. As in, you've got nowhere else to go if you hate your boss or get fired or laid off. It sucks.

I've been looking in IT jobs for the last month. I found a great job last month, but they couldn't hold it for me and I can't start until the beginning of the year.

The 2 best casinos for IT jobs are MGM and Harrah's.

For MGM, I use this site.. http://secure02.mgm-mirage.com/employment/jobsearch.asp all of their IT jobs are under the "MGM Mirage - Corporate" dropdown.

Harrah's lists all of their jobs on Hotjobs.. Just put Harrah's in the keyword field and pick Vegas.

Good luck.

If you work at MGM, you can't gamble there? But you can gamble anywhere else?

Corporate has no such policy. I see lots of Bellagio dealers playing in the games.

If you're going to lose your paycheck, they would just as soon get it than let another casino get it.

Man, I would consider doing that for a couple of years but those summers are a killer.

MGM has a large number of casinos....MGM, Excalibur, NYNY, MB, Monte Carlo, Bellagio, Mirage, TI. I dunno if you can gamble there as an employee or not.

In short the IT market sucks there. I searched for IT jobs the last 2-3 years because I was interested in moving there. Not to toot my horn but I'm way above desktop support and helpdesk, and maybe once every other month a job would popup that fit my skills but the pay was atrocious, especially with the skyrocketing cost of living there (housing). Surprisingly, none of the jobs that popped up for me were at casinos.

Your best bet might be to look at local IT consulting places, I know there are a few there and they don't usually advertise on Monster or Careerbuilder.
