Bottom set, playing scared
Live 5/10 game. Pretty sweet loose game, not too aggressive, and only one decent opponent (bb)
Hero is in co with 5 :heart:5 :spade: 2 ep's limp, hero limps, sb completes, bb checks (5sb) Flop is j :spade:5 :club:9 :club: sb checks, bb bets, 1 ep limper calls, other folds, hero raises, sb folds, bb and limper call. (11 sb) Turn is 6 :spade: bb checks, limper bets, hero calls?, bb calls (8.5bb) River is 4 :club: bb checks, limper checks, hero ?????? I'm already pretty sure I should have raised the turn for a couple of reasons, but given a not-so-great river, what's your line here? I'll post results in white below. [color:white] [/color] |

Re: Bottom set, playing scared
Definitely bet this river. I'm assuming you lost this hand, but the point is that your opponents will very often not be on the draw and you will just miss out on some clear value.

Actually I won the hand but I'm kicking myself for missing another bet.

Re: Bottom set, playing scared
My question is what are you putting your opponents on that you don't raise the turn? It seems like there are two flush draws on the board at this point and you want to make anyone pay to get there - if it is a passive game like you say, I'm guessing you are getting two callers... With the BB leading the turn after you raised the flop, there is a good chance he has something like J9 - you say he is a decent player - do you see him making this play with a set or would he just let you continue your aggression show by checkraising? Limper may have something like TQ or A9 - I think you hand is still by far the best.

Re: Bottom set, playing scared
You must raise the turn here, for many of the reasons outlined before. I'll add another one: if you do not raise the turn, your raises on the flop in position will not get respect. This takes the free card play away from you in the future, since top pair out of position is never afraid of betting into you anymore, knowing that the worst that you are going to do is just call.

Re: Bottom set, playing scared
yea, definatly raise the turn. as played, i dont mind a check on the river as anyone drawing to a flush just made it[one of the reasons a turn raise is manditory], but i think i would have bet.

Re: Bottom set, playing scared
I think you hand kind of fits into the strong but a bit vulnerable category so you need to bet and raise as much as possible to try and get out any flush or str8 draws out there. Pump it up here when you can. I would even bet this river almost always as well. I have been forcing myself to bet these kinds of rivers for value because it is a bit of a weak part of my game right now. Some may just check here but I would bet

Re: Bottom set, playing scared
Like everyone said, raise the turn. It also makes the river easier. Knowing how bb (the only other decent player) responds to calling 2 bets cold on the turn goes a long way in deciding what to do on the river.

Re: Bottom set, playing scared
Raise the turn! As played Im bet/folding the river. If BB is a decent player as you say he will not likely CR the river so his check means he prolly hasnt hit a flush. Limper led the turn and checked the river so a flush is unlikely for him as well. Only hand to really fear from him is a 7,8 for a straight that got there on the turn, which he might have bet/folded on the river, but didn't. Soooooo I think we are good enough times here to B/F.
