hold on, he wants to get rid of kickers? Seriously, if that happens we might as well change the name to Throwball.

yeah his argument is that back in the day actual football players used to do the placekicking, and somewhere along the way (i forget the specific players), it turned into a skill thing with kicking specialists handling the work. If the NFL had gotten rid of placekicking back in the 70s the game would be football in a more pure form. you would have to go for 2 every time or go for it/punt on 4th.

Certain parts of his argument I agree with. For one the extra point in the NFL is the single biggest waste of meaningless time ever. But without field goals the game would get waay too one dimensional.

i can't stand skip bayless. 4 years after the buckeyes beat miami he was still ripping on them. he went so far as to accuse will allen of the giants of taunting willis mcgahee after he made the tackle that injured his knee. utter nonsense. allen should have sued him.

Curious if Skip hates the forward pass as well.

the argument that place kicking should be removed from pro football i think is a very interesting one. personally i like the game the way it is. if you can rag on kickers for being some of the most important guys on the field with the least athletic ability you can rag on QBs for the same reason.

[/ QUOTE ]

it's interesting but i think it lacks merit. his argument is basically that the game shouldn't come down to a single play, when the fact of the matter is that most football games do. numerous analysts, coaches, players (some good, some bad) have said that a football game is essentially decided in a handful of plays. most nfl teams have approximately the same level of talent, so it makes sense that a game would be decided by a few big plays. sometimes it's a 58 yd fg, sometimes it's 90 yd int return.

can we not flood this w/ "skip bayless is an idiot" posts. we all know he likes to make outrageous assertions.

I don't think he wants to actually get rid of kickers. Just get rid of the position and make a regular guy kick the ball.

Yeah, hard to debate that. What's the extra point success rate, around 98%? So stupid. Not that I have a better idea, but maybe make them get it into the end zone again from the two yard line. Something that's not incredibly boring and repetitive.

NFL Blitz got this right. If you chose not to go for two, then it would give you the extra point automatically.

or just move it back to a 40 yarder or something. that of course puts more importance on kickers. good ones will stand out more than bad ones.

it's like what they should do with penalty shots in a futbol shootout. move it back to where the goalie has a reasonable chance and doesn't have to guess.

That's fine. I'd like to see the success rate in the 60-80% range. Make it matter. Also, more missed extra points means that 7 and 0 aren't such powerful squares in football pools.
