Default Stupid Wii widescreen question

I have component cables for the Wii, and I have it outputting at 16:9 and in 480p. However, when I play a game or whatever, my HDTV (Sony 50" rear-projection LCD) still displays it at 4:3 with black bars on the sides. I can use the TV remote to force it to stretch it out, and I guess it looks ok - I guess I just want to make sure that this is what I'm supposed to do. My TV switches between widescreen and 4:3 by itself with every other device I use so I'm slightly confused by the fact that I have to do this manually.

Check the settings on the Wii. You might have it set for 4:3.

a) double-check that wii settings has it at 16:9
b) double-check that u are playing a game that is widescreen, as not all wii games are widescreen (dumb publishers)

My Toshiba DLP 50" changes the screen settings every so often back to 4:3. I just put it back on full and it works. I'm in the same boat as you, as I have no idea why the box decides to pick one or the other.

It's def on HDTV/16:9, and looking on Google it appears that very few games (and none of the "big" ones, which are the only ones I have right now) don't support 480p/16:9.

When I change to 4:3 in the menu I notice that the menu options fill the whole 4:3 screen, but when I change to 16:9 they become a little more squished in the 4:3 screen and there's extra room on the sides, which leads me to believe it's correctly switching and I just have to tell my TV to stretch it out.

Actually, doing some research, it appears that 480p in widescreen is supposed to output in 720x480, so if the Wii is only outputting 640x480, then even if it looks right when stretched out I'm losing resolution, which sucks. Yes, your TV is on the wrong setting.

For the rest of you guys, is the Wii actually sending a 16:9 signal? When I hit the display button on my TV it says it's receiving a 480p 4:3 signal, even though (I've checked 5 times) I have 16:9 set in system settings.

Yes, resolution is set to EDTV/HDTV and widescreen is set to 16:9.

Yeah, my TV does pass-through; my Xbox shows up in 720p, my 360 and cable box show up in 1080i, without me having to change any settings to make them appear that way. It's a Sony 50" LCD rear-projection (KDF-E50A10).
