processes running on my comp ?
When I first turn on my comp there are like 50 processes running, most are things like limwire and other crap I dont need to have running. A comp tech guy I talked to said I should have only like 30 processes running at a time. How do I get it so that all these programs dont run automatically?

Re: processes running on my comp ?
Start---Run---type msconfig----Then click the startup tab. uncheck anything you don't need, but don't uncheck any process that you're not familiar with.

Re: processes running on my comp ?
As others have stated, run one or more antispyware programs to make sure your system is clean. It's entirely possible that you just have startup clutter. It seems that far too many software packages stick processes into the startup process. These usually speed up the loading of their particular program, but after you accumulate 10 or 15 of them they just slow down your boot-up and generally bog down your system. You can disable these with msconfig, or with Autoruns, a free utility that looks in some places that msconfig doesn't.
Something else you might want to do is google the names of the executables that are running, or that show up in msconfig or autoruns, if you don't know what they are. Some of them may be essential processes: A little research will help you separate the wheat from the chaf. |

Re: processes running on my comp ?
Spybot Search and destroy:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html AVG Free edition: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 Download and update these programs, then start the computer in "safe mode" (F8 at during reboot until you see the choice), and THEN run them to make sure you get a good cleaning the fist time. Start/run msconfig/start-up is a great way to free up resources, uncheck anything you recoginize as not being essential, google anything else and normally you will get a page that lets you know if it is "critical". Un-install Lime Wire Un-install Lime Wire Un-install Lime Wire strange, when you type Lime Wire as one word you get this...[censored] |
